QB Kevin Newsome decommitted from Michigan.

I'm sure they'll now really make a push for Smith.

It's also possible that we might end up with Newsome.

Stranger things have happened.

Smith would be 2nd or 3rd choice at Michigan, no?

At USF he is our only QB target, right?

Its possible but his de-committing isn't surprising because of all the pressure he has to stay in Virginia.  I think this hurts our chances of getting a QB this year.  Newsome is almost a lock to go to VT.  Plus, as you said, Michigan will now put the full court press for Smith.  I'm not saying that Smith would go there but it is more of a battle now.

QB Kevin Newsome decommits from Michigan

By Josh Helmholdt • Special to the Free Press • August 19, 2008

One of Michigan’s two verbal commitments at the quarterback position in the class of 2009 has decided to re-open his recruitment and is no longer pledged to the Wolverines.

The father of Chesapeake, Va., four-star quarterback Kevin Newsome confirmed Tuesday afternoon with rivals.com that the family has informed Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez that Newsome will start looking at other schools.

The 6-foot-3, 217-pound Newsome committed to Michigan on April 25, following a visit to the campus for the Wolverines’ spring game. Soon after, however, the family started to question whether it had made the decision too early.

Newsome’s father said Michigan will still be considered as his son moves forward with his recruitment. One factor expected to be important, however, is the proximity of a school to his Hampton Roads-area home. Virginia Tech should be atop the list of new contenders for his services ,and Newsome’s former high school coach already has publicly lobbied for him to play his college football in-state.

Michigan still has a verbal commitment from Texas’ Shavodrick Beaver, who is ranked as the No. 8 dual-threat quarterback in the country by rivals.com. The Wolverines also have continued to recruit four-star San Diego quarterback Tate Forcier (6-1, 190) and Miramar, Fla., four-star Eugene Smith (6-3, 182), who was selected to participate in the prestigious Elite 11 quarterback camp this summer.

Both Smith and Forcier have Michigan among their top schools and plan to take official visits to Ann Arbor this fall. Forcier is scheduled to make his official visit in conjunction with the Wolverines’ home opener, Aug. 30 against Utah. Smith has yet to set a date for his official visit to Michigan and also is considering Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Louisville and South Florida.

Michigan’s best chance at receiving a second quarterback commitment in the class of 2009 appears to lie with Forcier, who is the younger brother of former Michigan quarterback Jason Forcier. The elder Forcier transferred to Stanford in the spring of 2007, but there was no ill will harbored toward the school or program.

Forcier camped at Michigan in June and spent time getting to know quarterbacks coach Rod Smith. The two have forged a strong relationship, with Rodriguez and West Coast recruiter Tony Dews also involved. Rivals.com ranks Forcier as the No. 6 dual-threat quarterback and the most accurate passer in the country.

Josh Helmholdt is the recruiting editor for The Wolverine Magazine and thewolverine.com. He is also a national recruiting analyst for Rivals.com.
