ORLANDO -- One of the biggest questions concerning the state college football teams is: Who's ready to challenge the "Big Three" state powers?

While future Big East member South Florida seems well on its way to credibility, the Bulls have an unlikely challenger emerging -- Florida Atlantic.

FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger says the Owls, who are in the first of a two-year transition period toward Division I-A, will have a 40,000-seat oncampus domed stadium for the start of the 2007 season.

"[The stadium] is going to be an asset that is going to set FAU apart from anyone in the nation," Schnellenberger said. "What it will mean for our basketball teams, volleyball, soccer, indoor track teams and the other events that will be in there each year."

"This stadium will help us get a leg up on our goal to win the national championship at the Division I level. That goal has never wavered and I expect it to happen during my lifetime."

The proposed stadium completion date is Jan. 7, 2007. An announcement from the administration is forthcoming, along with a donation of $30 million to start the project. The administration decided on a domed stadium to consolidate football and basketball into one complex rather than build two facilities.

Schnellenberger said he expects the stadium to put FAU on the fast track to better opportunities in Division I-A.

"You can't win a national title in the Sun Belt Conference. You can't win it in Conference USA either," he said. "Someone is going to be interested in a competitive team in South Florida with a domed stadium."

The stadium will also be used for concerts and other events.

Don't be so quick to sell Howie short.  Besides you could be making the same mistake people do with us......."if they're new or I haven't heard of them, they can't be THAT good."

Made it deep into 1-AA playoffs in their third year, 3-0 against D-1A teams so far in their fourth year.  I wouldn't be at all suprised to see the Big East invite these guys!

That would sure hurt our recruiting in the Miami-Dade area!

It's got nothing to do with how good they are, it's about the attendance. He gets that straightened out and they will be a force ...........

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
