Why didn't WE get this series with Iowa???

Iowa does a great deal of recruiting in Florida. It seems to me that it would make more sense for them to schedule a series with us rather than Syracuse.  >:(

Orange adds Iowa to schedule in 2006-07

The Syracuse University football team will continue its tour of the Big Ten Conference with the addition of a two-game series with Iowa in 2006 and 2007.

The Hawkeyes become the fifth school from the Big Ten to be added to Syracuse's non-conference schedule through the end of the decade. Since 1982, SU has played every team in the Big Ten, including 10 out of 11 schools since 1990.

The Hawkeyes will play in the Carrier Dome on Sept. 9, 2006. The Orange is scheduled to return the game in Iowa City on Sept. 8, 2007.

Syracuse athletic director Jake Crouthamel said Thursday that Iowa had another team pull out of its schedule. He and Iowa athletic director Bob Bowlsby are longtime friends, and the Orange jumped at the chance to schedule the Hawkeyes.

"That's the kind of schedule our fans want to see," Crouthamel said. "They don't want to see us play New Hampshire. They don't want to see us play Rhode Island. They say, play up.

"I like the Big Ten teams, not that there's anything wrong with anybody else. Playing Big Ten teams is a little more compatible - and this is probably a New Englander's perspective - a little more compatible with us as an institution. We certainly don't lose anything with that kind of competition."

"We feel good about adding Syracuse to our future football schedules," said Bowlsby. "They have an excellent football tradition. We expect both games to be excellent for the fans of both schools."

Iowa will be one of two Big Ten teams the Orange will play in 2006. The other is Illinois, the university formerly led by new Syracuse chancellor Nancy Cantor.

In addition to the Hawkeyes and Illini (2006 and 2007), Syracuse has games against Ohio State (2007 and 2010), Northwestern (2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013) and Penn State (2008, 2009) from the Big Ten.

Crouthamel said Syracuse's scheduling philosophy is to seek non-conference games against schools "somewhere around the Mississippi (River) and not on the other side of the Rockies. We're not avoiding anybody. What we're trying to do is play a schedule that's attractive to our people here. If we have success in that schedule, we'll enhance the Big East as a conference and fulfill our role in the Big East as a contributing member. We've got to play up."

Syracuse has been touring the Big Ten for the last few seasons. It played Purdue this past season. It played Michigan in 1998, Wisconsin in 1997, Minnesota in 1996, Michigan State in 1990 and Indiana in 1982.

Syracuse last met Iowa in 1976, a game it lost 41-3. In 1975, the Orange defeated the Hawkeyes 10-7 at Archbold Stadium.

The 2005 season will mark the beginning of the new Big East with the additions of Cincinnati, Louisville and South Florida as full members and the departures of Boston College and Temple.

The Orange will add one, and possibly two, non-conference games in 2006. Crouthamel said the NCAA has not determined whether to allow schools to play 11 or 12 games that season.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
