Relatively speaking... no, they don't.

Every team in the AL East is a relativelyl big spender other than the Rays... the NL east you have two other teams that don't spend (marlins/nats), so 15 or so games with each of them could easily jack up tampa's win total.

And not playing NY,Bos could also raise their total (although they are doing well this year regardless)... and then Balt/Toronto are pseudo spenders... they spend a bunch but really don't seem to have a vision with their spending.

The fact that you think the rays are obviously going to take the majority of the games against the marlins right away shows your bias. Sometimes i really think people here dont watch sports outside of tampa bay based teams.  Also money spent doesn't equal wins so using that as any kind of barometer is just silly.

NL East>AL East

Well unless you go by name recognition.

Guys this isnt last year or 5 years ago.  I think the Rays are a better team than the Marlins, but the NL East IS better than the AL East.

Yankees are terrible, they cant steal bases, they cant throw any basestealers out, they have no speed, they have zero pitching, the only one hitting is Damon, Arod is one man, Jeter's career is on the downfall, POsada is old, Giambi isnt on juice anymore, Cano is an underachiever, Matsui and Abreau arent clutch, Mariano is older than dirt, Joba is good for the 8th inning, and they got rid of a hell of a coach for a guy who was fired by the Marliins.  They would be in last place in the NL East.

Take the label New York Yankees off of that team and you would all say they were horrible.

The only good teams in the AL East are the Sox, Rays and Blue Jays.

NL east has the Mets, Marlins, Braves, and Phillies...all solid teams.

The division argument is terrible.  Watch baseball outside of the Rays for once.  With all that said I still think the Rays have a better team than the Marlins but the Marlins play a tougher division.  Id rather play the Sox and Yankees 19 times than the Mets and Phillies.  No question about it.

Uh, you're kidding, right?  Not one team in the NL East has an above average lineup, and all the rotations are shaky.  The Blue Jays and Sox would both tear apart the NL East.  Everyone buried the Yankees at this time last year, and their SP actually has much more hope now than it did then.  Even the Orioles are looing pretty good after dumping some of their overpriced talent and getting a youth infusion.

The Marlins will fall apart, the Braves are one more SP injury away from finishing under 500, and the Mets aren't looking all that hot either.  The Phils might win the division by default, but I can't take seriously any team that has Pedro Feliz at 3B.

The marlins can't even beat the Reds in the home run capitol of the world, Great American Ballpark.

Smoke and mirrors.  It's only mid-May.

Besides, we were comparing the Marlins competition to the Rays competition.  The Marlins don't have to face the Marlins offense.

They lost the first two, sure. Should win tonight and hopefully split the series on Thursday.

The Mets and Phillies have decent line ups as well.

Home runs are just one small part of a potent offense.

http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/sortable_team_stats.jsp?statType=1&timeFrame=1&Submit=Submit&groupByTeam=true&baseballScope=mlb&timeSubFrame=2008&sortByStat=RBI

6 teams have more runs than the Marlins (1 of those teams is in the AL East)

9 teams have more hits than the Marlins (1 of those teams is in the AL East, one is in the NL East)

8 teams have more RBIs (1 of those teams is in the AL East)

The Red Sox have more total bases than the Marlins

9 teams have a higher team batting average than the Marlins (1 AL East team, 1 NL East team)

Aside from the long ball, the Marlins are still a top-third offense in the league, but far from the best.  That looks like the Red Sox.

The Red Sox (yes, the AL East Red Sox) have more runs, hits, doubles, rbis, total bases, walks, less strikeouts, more steals, less times caught stealing, a higher on base percentage, and a team batting average nearly 30 points higher than the Marlins.

And the Rays are still in first place ahead of the Red Sox.

The Rays are doing it with pitching... their ERA is almost a full half-run lower than the Sox, they have more shutouts, more complete games, have allowed far fewer hits, far fewer home runs...

I love stats =)
