On the field no, at least not yet.

Off-the-field, yes.  I don't recall anyone starting any threads titled "Can we even consider UF/UM/FSU/FIU/FAU a rival."

No.  And they never will be, since there won't be any more games after this year, possibly ever.  No matter how much they cry and beg to be a rival, it will never happen.  And just because someone makes a post asking a question, does not make them a "rival".  Rival for what, rivals strive for the same thing.  We aren't striving for a mid major conference crown.  USF will never allow it to become a "rivalry", because we will most likely never play again (or at least very infrequently).  And don't get me started on bcs/non bcs "rivalries".  BCS teams don't start rivalries with mid majors (forget about rivalries that were started before the bcs era).  Get this through your heads.

That's because we haven't had years of UF/UM/FSU/FIU/FAU fans trying to convince us they are our rivals .... If you have to convince a good portion of the opposing team's fanbase it's a rivalry, it's not one.

Aren't rivalries supposed to be hard fought and every time you play you never know who will win?

If we go by that UCF is not even close!

who cares, really.    :deadhorse

Leavitt won't allow this game to be scheduled after this year, as long as he is coach.  Read between the lines and compare his unenthusiastic comments about this game compared to Oleary begging for a game.

Lets just beat them and get it over with.  At least in football.  In the other sports, especially baseball, it's important to keep it going.  Not only does it bring focus to less popular sports, but like some already said, they're close geographically and it's good for keeping travel expenses down.

Really???  All sports teams from high school to the pros have rivals, don't they?

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
