Digg Del.icio.us Facebook Fark Google Newsvine Reddit Yahoo Print Reprints Post comment Text size: WASHINGTON - Whether the Marlins used pink bats or not, they remained red hot on Sunday in a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Washington for their seventh consecutive victory.

Jeremy Hermida's two-run homer and Dan Uggla's solo homer, his second of the game, off reliever Luis Ayala erased a 4-2 deficit in the eighth inning and completed a sweep that gives the Marlins (23-14) the best record in the major leagues.

The Marlins have beaten the Nationals eight of nine times. It was their 10th come-from-behind win and they are 11-4 in games decided by three runs or less.

"It is an advantage that we can hit home runs like that," said Hermida, who used a pink bat to raise awareness about breast cancer on Mother's Day. "We have a team where one swing can change a game."

BOX SCORE: Marlins 5, Nationals 4

For Hermida, it was his first homer since April 2 when he hit two in a 10-6 win over Houston. During the last 20 games, he has hit .318 (27 for 85) with a homer and 10 RBI.

Hermida's homer followed Alfredo Amezaga's infield hit off the glove of first baseman Aaron Boone, who had three hits, including a solo homer and two RBI. Ronnie Belliard also had a two-run homer for the Nationals.

"Uggla and Hermida had good days and so did Booney," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "[scott] Olsen battled and kept us in it. Hermida gave us the big two-run homer after Amezaga's hustle play and then Uggla."

Following Hermida's homer, Ayala (1-3) got two outs, but he couldn't get Uggla, who hit a 2-2 pitch to left field for the game-winner and the Marlins' 53rd homer, second in the majors behind Philadelphia.

Uggla, who started out using a pink bat, changed back to a regular bat after flying out in the fourth and hit a solo homer off Shawn Hill in the sixth.

"The pink bat didn't feel right," said Uggla, who is hitting .382 with nine runs, four homers and 12 RBI against the Nationals. "We had a chance late in the game and came back. We've done it a lot to win some close games. It's usually the sign of a pretty good team."

It was Uggla's second two-homer game of the season. Since moving down from the No. 2 spot in the order eight games ago, he is hitting .400 with seven homers and 15 RBI.

"The spot in the order doesn't matter," Uggla said. "If you hit homers, you hit them in any spot."

Olsen, who threw 59 pitches and gave up four runs on six hits in six innings, benefited from the rally.

"I felt good," said Olsen, "but they hit about everything that I threw up there, especially Booney. I've said before that our offense will carry us, and it did again today."

Logan Kensing (2-0), Renyel Pinto and Kevin Gregg (seventh save) finished the game. Marlins pitchers threw 95 pitches, one less than Hill, in the quickest game of the year (2:09) and continued their franchise-best start.

"These games in April and May are just as bigas the ones in August and September, especially if you're winning them," Uggla said.

The Rays play Boston and New York 19 times a year.

The Marlins play the pathetic Nationals 19 times a year.  And the Phillies suck too.

I would love to play the Yankees 19 times a year.  They may have the worst rotation in all of baseball.

The Nationals are pathetic but so are the Orioles.  The Rays and Marlins are both solid teams.

As for which division is better, its probably a tossup.

I would say the AL east goes Boston, Toronto, Rays, Yankees, Orioles.

NL East goes Mets, Phillies, Marlins, Braves, Nationals.

I can make a stronger argument that the NL East is more consistent and deeper than the AL East.  Times do change sometimes fellas, just look at the Rays.

Bruce Blingstein - A Mets fan, who adopted the Rays as his new AL team.

Teams the Marlins have beaten (team's winning pct):

NY Mets (.543) - 1

Pittsburgh Pirates (.472) - 3

Washington Nationals (.395) - 8

Houston Astros (.553) - 1

Atlanta Braves (.514) - 3

Milwaukee Brewers (.486) - 5

San Diego Padres (.368) - 2

So out of the Marlins 23 wins, 18 have come against teams UNDER .500. You've beaten FIVE teams with winning records, and if the Braves continue to sink, you'll soon have only two wins against .500 or better teams.  ****, a third of your wins have come against the Nats.

Let's look at the Rays...

Baltimore (.500) - 5

New York Yankees (.500) - 2

Seattle Mariners (.385) - 1

Minnesota Twins (.528) - 1

Chicago White Sox (.500) - 1

Toronto Blue Jays (.447) - 5

Boston Red Sox (.600) - 3

Anaheim Angels (.564) - 3

So out of the Rays 21 wins, 15 have come against teams .500 or BETTER.

5 wins vs. 500 or better vs. 15 wins... gee, which team is better?

MARLINS SUCK!!!!!

They will finish below .500 again.

We're not talking about the past, though, we're talking about right now and how 85% of your wins have come against teams that couldn't hold Toronto's jock.

Marlins are a competent team in a mediocre division... much like UCF is a competent team in the dregs of CUSA.

Congratulations... the Marlins are the UCF of Major League Baseball.  =)

PS - Just to irk you, I just bought you on Facebook and gave you away to Kevin Smith.  You're now owned by him.  =)

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

“In my mind, I’m kind of like, ‘OK, excuses over'. We know what we need to do. We’ve got the right team together, and now we move forward, and we’ll evaluate and be accountable to each other, including myself, from this point forward.”
