Great job!

Softball Takes Two From Providence

Release: 05/03/2008

The University of South Florida softball team (42-17, 16-4) is just two wins away from clinching the BIG EAST regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament after taking two games from Providence, 5-4 and 5-1, Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island.

The Bulls remain a game ahead of second-place DePaul who took two from Syracuse on Friday and sits at 15-5. USF wraps up regular season play at Connecticut on Sunday with a pair of games beginning at Noon, while DePaul travels to Providence for two on Sunday. Notre Dame and Connecticut sit two games back at 13-7 in conference play. Notre Dame has two games at Syracuse on Sunday.

If any of the four teams finished tied for the conference title, the BIG EAST Conference tie-breaking procedures will be determined in the following manner:

1. Regular season head-to-head results. If three or more teams are tied, they are viewed as a ‘mini conference’ when comparing head-to-head results. The team or team with the best combined record versus the other teams in the mini-conference gains the advantage.

2. Each team’s record versus the team occupying the highest position in the standings, continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.

3. Runs given up against each other.

If the ties can not be broken, the Commissioner will conduct a coin toss.

The full game recaps from the Providence games will follow shortly.

That's great.  I met 2B Britta Giddens at a gas station last week.  Very nice young lady.  We spoke about the upcoming week, the Big east tourny, and Cristi.  She says that Cristi is doing much better.

Softball Claims BIG EAST Title

Courtesy: USF

STORRS, Conn. – The University of South Florida softball team claimed the BIG EAST Conference regular season championship after Sunday’s action around the league.

“We are extremely proud of this team,” head coach Ken Eriksen said. “We come in each year with one goal in mind and that is to take one pitch at a time, one inning at a time, one game at a time.

“The season's not over yet. Going into the conference tournament we have to remain focused and take that same philosophy after the regular season.”

The Bulls also clinched the number one seed in the BIG EAST Conference Championship tournament and will play eight seed Providence on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium in Louisville, Ky.

Despite the cancellation of Sunday’s double header at Connecticut, the Bulls finished with a .800 win percentage at 16-4.

Second place No. 23 DePaul (45-16, 16-6) concluded the regular season with a .727 win percentage.

This is the school’s first regular season title, in any sport, since joining the BIG EAST and the second conference championship. The women’s tennis team won the conference tournament in 2007.

The Bulls have finished in second place each year since joining the BIG EAST in 2006. The last time the Bulls captured the regular season crown was in 1998 as part of the Southern Atlantic Softball Alliance and the Atlantic Coast Conference. USF finished the regular season in first place from 1996-98.

The Bulls swept Providence, 5-4 and 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at Raymond Field.

All BIG EAST Championship games are available live online through JumpTV Sports at www.BIGEAST.tv starting at 10 a.m. (EDT) on May 8. One-time subscriptions are $5.95.

CBS College Sports will televise the semifinals on Friday, May 9, and the championship game on Saturday, May 10 at 5 p.m
