Done deal per Brett.

The St. Petersburg Bowl received approval today from the NCAA’s Bowl Certification Committee and will debut in December at Tropicana Field.

Owned and operated by ESPN, the St. Pete Bowl will pit schools from the Big East and Conference USA. The inaugural game will be played between Dec. 20-23, 2008.

Because the St. Pete Bowl landed a C-USA team, the NCAA’s Bowl Certification Committee also approved a change in the Papajohns.com Bowl. The Birmgingham, Ala., based Papajohns.com Bowl will now match a Big East team against the No. 9 selection from the Southeastern Conference. It previously pitted the Big East vs. C-USA.

The St. Pete Bowl will be the sixth bowl owned and operated by ESPN.

The Big East now will have bowl berths for seven of its eight teams in 2008 and Conference USA, which loses the Papajohns.com Bowl slot but gains the St. Pete Bowl, remains at five bowl berths for its 12 members.

Sweet.  Now there is some good off season news.  THe more bowls the marrier.  Hopefully we get 7/8 of our conference bowl elidgable.  Down side: This is gunna make every play weak OOC to ensure a bowl.

Big East Partners with St. Pete Bowl

Release: 04/30/2008

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST Conference has announced a partnership with the newly launched St. Petersburg Bowl that will pit the conference’s representative against an opponent from Conference USA at Tropicana Field beginning in 2008.

The BIG EAST’s participation in the St. Petersburg Bowl is in concert with another negotiated change to the conference’s annual bowl arrangement. The PapaJohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., which had featured a BIG EAST school against a Conference USA opponent, will now match the BIG EAST against an opponent from the Southeastern Conference.

The NCAA certified the St. Petersburg Bowl Wednesday. The bowl was established by ESPN Regional Television and the game will air on ESPN in December.

“The St. Petersburg Bowl is another great bowl opportunity for the BIG EAST,†said Commissioner Michael Tranghese. “The game is played in a BIG EAST market and already has generated great interest in the local community. The partnership with ESPN will help the game grow quickly. Our coaches are always excited to play a postseason game in the state of Florida.â€Â

“We look forward to the opportunity to host a bowl game at a great destination – St. Petersburg,†said Pete Derzis, Senior Vice President and General Manager of ESPN Regional Television. “The St. Petersburg area has a great association with sports, it’s a great venue, and this is sure to be a rewarding experience for the student-athletes and their teams as well as the fans who attend the game.â€Â

The 2008 PapaJohns.com Bowl, meanwhile, will be played at Legion Field in Birmingham Dec. 29 and televised on ESPN. That bowl is also operated by ESPN Regional Television.

“We have always wanted to have a bowl relationship with the Southeastern Conference,†said Tranghese. “We believe the game will continue to prosper under the BIG EAST and SEC banners.â€Â

“The approval of the St. Petersburg Bowl offered both the BIG EAST and Conference USA an opportunity to participate in a Florida-based bowl game,†said Derzis. “Consequently, we were able to partner with the SEC in Birmingham. We look forward to the added excitement that the SEC will bring to the already successful PapaJohns.com Bowl.â€Â

I can't imagine the SEC would be too interested in having one of their teams dragged into that toilet in Birmingham, no matter who they play.

Totally Agree!! Why woud the SEC want to add another $500,000 dollars to the pool of money they split by degrading their 10th best team making them play in a crumby stadium.

Vote this man president!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

THEY WOULD DO IT

i doubt the NCAA would let the SEC add another bowl affiliation without losing an exsisting tie-in.  SEC has a hard time getting 9 teams eligible each year.

It was approved by the NCAA today.

Besides, if the SEC doesn't have a bowl eligible team, PapaJohns can get one from another conference to take their spot.

There was one proposed Bowl today that the NCAA didn't approve.

An important new wrinkle on the Big East side of this: Starting in 2008, the Papajohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., which had a tie-in with Conference USA, will now feature a Southeastern Conference team against a Big East representative, a significant upgrade. It also will move from a pre-Christmas slot to Dec. 29, a date that reflects the bowl's greater relevance.

The St. Petersburg Bowl joins a lineup of 32 bowls returning from last season; the NCAA also approved a "Congressional Bowl" in Washington, D.C., which will feature Navy and an ACC opponent. A proposed "Rocky Mountain Bowl" in Salt Lake City was not approved. Last year there were seven NCAA teams that were bowl eligible but didn't have a bowl to play in, and organizers feel the location and conference affiliations can make this bowl a viable and successful event.

Well, the last two years haven't been a problem... since the NCAA went to 12 games and the ability to count an FCS win every year (2006).

Year: # .500 or better teams

2007: 10

2006: 9

2005: 6

2004: 7

2003: 7

2002: 8

I love it, but the new St. Pete Bowl might kill our shot at making this.
