Former USF star linebacker Ben Moffitt who surprisingly didn’t get his name called during the 2008 draft, signed a free-agent contract with the Houston Texans several hours later

Former USF linebacker Ben Moffitt who surprisingly didn’t get his name called during the 2008 draft, signed a free-agent contract with the Houston Texans several hours later said his agent, Marc Lillibridge of the National Sports Agency.

“He had about 14-15 teams inquiring, but the Texans were the best situation,†said Lillibridge. “They didn’t draft many linebackers, and he has a good opportunity.â€Â

Moffitt had been the anchor in the middle for years with Bulls and increased his stock after his senior season where he tallied 104 total tackles, 12 for a loss, 4 interceptions, and one for a score, and was an All-Big East First Team selection. After 43 career starts with the Bulls he then a strong showing at the NFL combine, then running a 4.5 40 at the USF Pro day and was considered a mid-round to late round pick. But as the draft progressed and names I never heard of were selected, the former star Linebacker’s name wasn’t called.

“I’m very surprised and shocked actually that he wasn’t drafted,†said Lillibridge. We talked to a lot of teams during the late round who wanted to draft him but didn’t have any picks left.â€Â

After the draft the calls kept coming, but Moffitt wanted to get it done, and the Texans were the best fit.

“The Texans are a 4-3 team, and an up and coming team with an improving defense,†said Lillibridge. “They don’t have a real back-up in the middle behind DeMeco Ryans, or Zac Diles, and Morlon Greenwood. If he works hard like he does he could be one of their six linebackers.â€Â

Moffitt knows all about hard work and will also get to work under former Packer star linebacker Coach Johnny Holland, who in his first year with the team, helped middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans earn AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
