Bulls Cage Wildcats, 8-5

TAMPA, Fla. – University of South Florida junior pitcher Daniel Thomas struck out eight Villanova Wildcats in the Bulls' 8-5 victory Friday night at Red McEwen Field.

The right hander earned his second win of the season, tossing 141 pitches in 6.1 innings. He struck out eight Wildcats and allowed two earned runs from seven hits in his ninth appearance of the year.

"Daniel is such a competitor and tonight he was on," said Lelo Prado, USF head coach. "DT tonight probably made himself a lot of money tonight because he pitched the best game he's had since I've been here."

Freshman Ryan Lockwood had three singles in the game, extending his hitting streak to 25 games, the longest hitting streak at USF since last season's 24-game stretch by Walter Diaz. Lockwood also had an RBI and scored a run against Villanova.

"Ryan Lockwood and Stephen Hunt are baseball players, and that's what it's all about," said Prado. "When you are a baseball player you come to the ballpark ready to play. Lockwood comes every day ready to play, and Hunt had a good game tonight, too."

Hunt was 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs as the designated hitter.

2nd game in a row where we let the opposing team back into the game when it should have been a blow-out.  Prado can't be happy about that, but we are on a nice little streak winning 6 of the last 7.

Great job Athletics with the Student Appreciation event. I heard several people say they didn't realize how good of a time the games can be. There were about 40 students over in the covered area for the game, many of whom had never been to a game before.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
