The article got removed later that day.  I don't know if it is accurate or not.  He is indeed injured and out for a good while.

It appears to be right here:

No mention there of anything to do with the Plancher incident:

First Running Back Kevin Smith leaves school early to head to the NFL. Now, it looks like the man called upon to replace him in the backfield might not be around either. Sources close to the UCF football program tell Channel 9, Phillip Smith is no longer with th team, adding they were not sure if he quit or was kicked off. Phillip Smith was UCF's 2nd leading rusher last season and was expected to be the starter in 2008, but a leg injury had kept him out of action since the 2nd week of spring practice. When asked if Smith was still on the team, a UCF spokesman told Channel 9 he has no information to confim or deny our report.

Many think Latavius Murray will start regardless if P Smith was there or not.  Kinda like Wilcox in 05, the projected starter doesn't always end up there.

So he leaves the program because he is affraid of a freshman beating him out? Some great talent you have over there. So who is this 5 star RB that you all have coming in?

He was in the academic/on-field performance doghouse almost all last season.  And before you go on about 4.0 gpas or something else that makes you look stupid, the team's average is around a 3.0.  For football, that is very good.  However, we all know there are players that do not excel in the classroom.

I've heard the same thing about him... grades and grades only.  No O'Leary conspiracy theory there.

However, UCF is hurting big time on offense now... a QB that wasn't good enough to beat out dead-arm Israel, no RB with game experience, and decent WRs (but who's going to get them the ball?)

That defense better be much improved, because UCF will have a hard time putting up 17 points a game as it stands.

they still play CUSA D's. They will average more than 17 points a game. To be honest we could prob find 22 non football players on campus that could score 17 points vs those horrible D's.

Phillip Smith, heir apparent to Kevin Smith has reportedly left the program.  There are some rumblings that he's one of the athletes that went to the Sentinel, and the result is that he's no longer welcome on the team.  Don't know how much of this is reality, nor whether we'll ever know what the reality is since ucIF has a tendency to hush everything up.  If true, this is bad for ucIF, on different levels.  The loss of Phillip leaves them very thin at RB, with a frshman likely the starter.  I don't even need to get into the repercussions if Phillip is gone becasue he went to the Sentinel...

You heard wrong...he's still on the team.  This news is not correct.  He did get injured during spring drills..but is still on the team.  Go back to your lives.
