OK. So let's say we win out from here in conference play. Not the surest bet they way we've played lately, but let's keep hopeful that the ship will right. What would need to happen for us to be at the top of our conference? (Obviously, this is quite hypothetical, and way too early to be doing. But I can't help it!!!).

2007 Big East Standings

TEAM                  CONF RECORD            OVERALL RECORD

Connecticut                3-0                                7-1

West Virginia              2-1                                7-1

Rutgers                      2-2                                5-3

Louisville                    2-2                                5-4

Cincinnati                    1-2                                6-2

South Florida              1-2                                6-2

Pittsburgh                  1-2                                3-5

Syracuse                    1-2                                2-6

GAMES LEFT IN CONFERENCE PLAY:

Syracuse at Pittsburgh

Cincinnati at #18 South Florida

Rutgers at #13 Connecticut

Louisville at #7 West Virginia

#13 Connecticut at Cincinnati

#18 South Florida at Syracuse

#7 West Virginia at Cincinnati

Syracuse at #13 Connecticut

Louisville at #18 South Florida

Pittsburgh at Rutgers

#13 Connecticut at #7 West Virginia

#18 South Florida at Pittsburgh

Cincinnati at Syracuse

Rutgers at Louisville

Pittsburgh at #7 West Virginia

SCENARIO NUMBER 1:

WVU - Wins: LVille, Cincy, UConn, Pitt, Losses: 0, Final BE Record: 6-1

Rutgers - Wins: UConn, Pitt, LVille, Losses: 0, Final BE Record: 5-2

UConn - Wins: Cincy, Cuse, Losses: WVU, Rutgers, Final BE Record: 5-2

USF - Wins: Cincy, Cuse, LVille, Pitt, Losses: 0, Final BE Record: 5-2

This means that even if UConn loses two games (to WVU and to Rutgers) and if Rutgers does not lose a game, we're in a 3-way tie for 2nd place. However, USF lost to both, and we would be 4th as a result of tiebreakers. On the other hand, I think bowls are allowed to choose who they want when it comes to teams with the same record... can anyone shed light on that? That would mean we would literally be in a toss-up for any bowl game under the BCS... Gator, Sun, International, Car Care, PapaJohn's.com Bowls. WVU could win out and they'd be conference champs and BCS invitees. It's also possible if we win out that we could be an at-large BCS team, but I tend to think that's unlikely. Finally - Cincy plays USF and WVU, so assuming things go the way they should (again, a big assumption), Cincy would have 3 conference losses.

SCENARIO NUMBER 2:

Same as Scenario #1 EXCEPT:

Rutgers - Wins: Pitt, LVille, Losses: UConn, Final BE Record: 4-3

UConn - Wins: Rutgers, Cincy, Cuse, Losses: WVU, Final BE Record: 6-1

WVU and UConn tie for 1st in the conference and WVU wins the tiebreaker for the title. WVU goes to BCS game, UConn may be a choice for an at-large bid or not. We become #3 in the conference, and depending on UConn's BCS chances (doubtful, unfortunately for them), we could be looking at Gator, Sun, Car Care, or PapaJohns.com Bowl.

Basically, the only ways for us to be #2 in the Big East or higher would be if a few of these happened in combination:

Rutgers loses a game to Pitt or LVille

WVU loses to LVille or Cincy (which would put Cincy back in contention, but below USF if we beat them)

UConn loses to WVU AND to Cuse, Rutgers or Cincy

So, I guess we have to hope that UConn loses to WVU, Rutgers, and Cincy (Final 4-3 record), Rutgers loses to LVille (Final 4-3 record), and WVU loses to LVille (Final 5-2 record), in addition to USF winning out. That would give us the conference title with the tiebreaker over WVU. If any one of these didn't happen but the rest did, we would be #2 in the conference. If any 2 of these don't happen, we're looking at #3-4.

I've been up all night at work and couldn't get to sleep so I looked into this. I don't presume my math is necessarily correct, and I didn't account for every single situation (just the more likely ones). What do ya'll think?

Divine intervention.

The way we stay atop the confrerence would be to have all the team planes crash except Pitt, UL, Cuse
