Restrepo, Mittoo Pick Up BIG EAST Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  Goalkeeper Diego Restrepo and defender Andre Mittoo of the University of South Florida men’s soccer team were named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the week ending Oct. 1, the conference office announced Monday.

The accolade is the second of the year for Restrepo as he was also named to the honor roll on Sept. 10 following two shutout performances against FIU and No. 15 South Carolina at the UConn/adidas Classic in Storrs, Conn.

The Cali, Columbia, native posted an undefeated record this weekend and held steady through two double-overtime matches, logging over 230 minutes in the net.  Against Pittsburgh on Friday night, the Panthers made the most of a late-awarded penalty kick to escape with a 1-1 tie.  Restrepo locked down even more in the Sunday match-up against No. 6 West Virginia, keeping the Mountaineers at bay through regulation and the first overtime until Mittoo headed home the game-winner three minutes into the second extra frame.  The 1-0 victory was Restrepo’s fourth shutout of the season.

For Mittoo, the accolade follows a weekend of career-firsts.  The freshman garnered his first-ever point on the assist to Jordan Seabrook against Pitt, and then followed up on Sunday with his first-ever goal in sending USF past its second nationally ranked opponent of the year.

The score was the first goal that WVU has given up all year during running play and only it’s third allowed all year.

This week marks the second time this season that two Bulls have been named to the honor roll at the same time.  Senior Simon Schoendorf and freshman Bernardo Anor both picked up recognition on Sept. 17 following their twin hat tricks against American.

USF continues its four-match road trip next Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. when it faces off against Louisville at Cardinal Park.  The match will be the fifth in a row against BIG EAST foes and the first against a Red Division opponent.  The Bulls currently sit in second place in the Red Division, just two points behind Villanova.

The team will return to Tampa to face VU on Fri., Oct. 12 at 8 p.m.  Tickets to all USF home matches are $5 for adults, $3 for youth 16-and-under and $2 for groups of 10 or more.  Season ticket packages are also available.  Call 1-800-GoBulls or visit www.GoUSFBulls.com for details.  Spectators will have the opportunity to get player and coach autographs at the conclusion of every home game down on the field.

Fans can also catch all home games on the USF Press Pass.  Live video and audio streaming is available for all matches played in the USF Soccer Stadium with Jim Henderson delivering the play-by-play call.
