Injury report

Cornerback Jonathan Wilhite (hamstring), safety Aairon Savage (ankle) and linebacker Tray Blackmon (ankle) all practiced Wednesday and are expected to play against USF.

"Tray Blackmon went through about three-quarters of the practice," said AU head coach Tommy Tuberville. "Aairon Savage went a little bit more than three-quarters. Wilhite has been going the last two days. He's fine."

Kicker Wes Byrum (ankle) remains questionable. If the true freshman can't go, AU will turn the kicking duties over to sophomore Zach Kutch.

"Zach is kicking well," said Tuberville. "If we kicked today, Zach would probably kick, but we've got three days left. Wesley has come a long way. If he continues to improve, he might be able to kick certain distances."

It may be a few more weeks before running back Tristan Davis returns from toe surgery.

"He's walking some on crutches, but he'll get off those the end of the week and start his rehab back," said Tuberville.

Quarterback Neil Caudle returned to practice this week and has been getting a few reps with the second-team. Wide receiver Montez Billings is also back to full speed.

Quick Hitters:

***QB Kodi Burns has been playing the part of USF quarterback Matt Grothe on the scout team this week.

"Kodi is working with the scout team because he ran that offense (USF) in high school, but he's also been practicing with the other guys. It's been a mix back and forth," said Tuberville.

***American Idol winner Taylor Hicks will perform with the AU band at halftime of Auburn's game against Mississippi State on Sept. 15. Hicks enrolled at Auburn in 1995 where he studied business and journalism for three years.

***The Tigers practiced for two hours in full pads Wednesday afternoon and will wrap up preparations for USF with a practice Thursday morning at 8:50 a.m. CT. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 8:06 p.m. Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium and will be carried on ESPN2.

Tuberville wants to see his offense step up this week but don't expect any major changes.

"You always change your game plan," said Tuberville. "This is totally different than what we're going to see defensively. There's not a panic. We won a lot of games with what we're doing. You can't change in midstream of your quarterback and what your quarterback knows, what your offense knows. If you change, you have to go to a whole new offense and be susceptible to disaster.

"We'll change some formations. Hopefully we'll hold our composure a little bit better and we don't lose our concentration and fundamentals, which we lost last week."

***Auburn is 12-1 in home night games since the 2000 season including four wins over nationally-ranked teams.

At least you guys going to the game won't have to listen to Taylor Hicks.
