Want another upset? AU, LSU next to fall

Friday, September 07, 2007

It's just South Florida, right? A team that has played college football only since 1997 and with the big boys for seven.

No way a brand name like Auburn is going to lose to Brand X in its backyard.

Saturday night in Jordan-Hare Stadium, No. 17 Auburn, a team struggling to find its way, takes on seven-point underdog South Florida in a game that's far more important to Tommy Tuberville than South Florida's Jim Leavitt.

This is no gimme for the Tigers. Last year, the Bulls defeated then-No. 7 Big East power West Virginia on the road; the school captured its first bowl victory; and quarterback Matt Grothe, listed as fourth on the depth chart two seasons ago, was named Big East Freshman of the Year.

Two years ago, the Bulls blew out No. 9 Louisville 45-14.

Get our drift?

If this were the Auburn of old, with a good offense to go with the great defense, there wouldn't be any question about beating some Big East newcomer. But quarterback Brandon Cox doesn't have the running game to keep from getting beat up. It may come in time, but probably not this week against the Bulls, who just might be the best team Auburn will play in the first four weeks of the season.

This week's games:

South Florida at Auburn

With eight starters returning on offense and seven on defense from the team that won at West Virginia, South Florida has the opportunity to move up the food chain. Unless running back Mario Fannin is the real deal and offensive coordinator Al Borges can figure out how to protect Cox and turn his mediocre receivers into playmakers, the Tigers are going down. South Florida 20, Auburn 18

Great more bulletin board material for Auburn.  I can hear Tubberville now

"Even our own state doesn't believe in us!"

You better believe Tubbs is playing up all these outlets picking us to upset them in their house in a night game, something that hasnt happened in 4 years or so.  We are gunna have to get on them early or at least weather the early storm to have a chance.

FYI...

Half the state never believes in Auburn.
