What does it cost us to not make the BE tourney?

What does it cost us by not going to an NIT or NCAA Tourney?

Anyone know?

Not a terrible about of money. The NCAA tourny and conference tournys don't pull in anything CLOSE to what a good bowl in football makes for a school.

The NCAA pays out for the Dance to the conference who then pays the schools, additional revenues from the NCAA are paid straight.  I do not know how the BE pays out its tourney money but I think it is prabably close to how the Big Ten pays out theirs.

In the B10 The moneys from the tourney are pooled and then shared by the teams with incentives for performance.   For example let us say that 5 B10 schools make the NCAA  tourney.  Indiana bounces out in the second round, Illinois in the first round, Michigan State in the second round Ohio State Makes the Final four, and Wisconsin bounces out in the fourth round.  The B10 would then take its total amount and divide by 25 units (11 B10 schools + 5 first round games + 4 second round games + 2 third round games + 2 fourth round games + 1 final four)  The schools are then paid by their performance one unit for being a B10 school + 1 unit for every round of the tourney that you compete in.  So under this scenaio Ohio State would receive the most and non - tourney teams receive the least.

The NCAA payouts are based on units that were derived from previous perfomance of the conference over the previous six years, thus this years performance will not be reflected in NCAA payouts until next year.  One unit is awarded for each game in the tourney over the previous six years final four appearances count as one unit, no units are awarded for the championship.  Each unit this year is worth $163,981 to each conference .  The BE has about 83 units for this years tourney (If I counted right) Which would be about $13 million from the mens tourney, total NCAA payouts will be higher due to other non- NCAA mens tourney factors.  The Big East should expect a toal of about $25 millio for all sports from the NCAA this year.

So if I understand accurately.  In this scenario, each game we miss out in the NCAA will cost us $163,981?

If we can make it to the tourney it would mean roughly $164,000.  Win one game and it's a total of $328,000?  It's a long way off, but certainly some interesting numbers to consider.

Goes back to the math we talked about when trying to get a big name coach.  Get somone that can bring in at least 6,000 people to see our games ( a change of 2,000 per game shouldn't be too hard for a big name considering the BE teams we play) plus making the tourney, the numbers get real interesting:

2000 x 14 home games x $30/ticket=$840,000 + $164,000 to get us to the tournament=$1,004,000.  This is still excluding sneaker contract revenue for the school, etc.  I would also assume that not making the BE tournament costs us some money too.

I think the numbers clearly show that we can't afford not to bring in a big name coach.  The hard part is getting over the initial hump of the buyout.  i think the coach should be able to pay for himself within a year or two if he can turn it around.

The next couple of days should prove interesting.

Just as a dose of reality when throwing out all that hypothetical income from the postseason, it's been 9 years since FSU has gone to the Tourney.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
