GRANSBERRY’S PERFORMANCE AT DEPAUL ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOK

JUNIOR CENTER collects 26 POINTS AND 23 REBOUNDS

Tampa, Fla. (March 6, 2007) – Junior center Kentrell Gransberry, an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection in 2006-07, capped the campaign with a record-setting performance at DePaul on March 3.

Gransberry finished with a personal-best 26 points and 23 rebounds in 36 minutes of action.  He shot 11-of-22 from the field and 13 of his boards came at the offensive end.  He was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for his efforts against the Blue Demons.

The Baton Rouge, La., native concluded the season averaging 15.6 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 57.7 percent from the field.  He collected 12 double-doubles in 23 outings and is currently ranked third in the nation and first in the BIG EAST in rebounding (through games of March 4).

Listed below is a summary of Gransberry’s accomplishments at DePaul.

Fifth player in USF history to join 20/20 club and first since Hakim Shahid in 1990

Ninth player in BIG EAST history to join 20/20 club and first since Georgetown’s Mike Sweetney in 2002

23 rebounds match the fourth-best single-game total in USF history (26, Fred Gibbs vs. West Florida, 12/3/72)

23 rebounds match the second-best single-game total in BIG EAST history (26, Michael Smith [PC] vs. SU – 1/25/94)

23 rebounds match the second-best single-game total in the nation this season (25 by Arizona Reid, High Point)

23 rebounds tied the single-game record at DePaul’s Allstate Arena

Kentrell's accomplishment is so much more amazing when you look at that school record of 26 set in 1972.  USF in 1972 averaged like a 90 points a game.  There were so many more shots per game than today's defensive struggle, half court games.  Great job KG!

And its even more amazing when you think that it was done against a real basketball school.  Look at all the other people on that list that are above 20, and look at their opponents...

West Florida and High Point

The Smith one against Syracuse is impressive too.

I found the final score on that Michael Smith 26-rebound game... Providence won 96-82. So that's another game played at a much higher pace than the one on Saturday. Either that or it went into overtime and got out of control with free throws.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
