(March 4, 2007) – After dropping the first game of the day 18-7, the University of South Florida baseball team beat the Central Michigan Chippewas 19-9 in the second game of the double-header Sunday afternoon at Red McEwen Field. Game OneIn the first game of the day, juniors Joey Angelberger and Brandin Daniel each notched their second home runs of the season. Angelberger’s was his second two-run homerun in as many games, a shot over the left field fence in the second inning, giving USF the 2-1 lead. Daniel’s shot was a two-run bomb in the seventh, scoring USF’s final runs of the game. CMU scored first in the second consecutive game, but USF took over the lead in the second, scoring two runs off of four hits. The Bulls tallied three more runs in the third, increasing the lead to four, but CMU answered in the fourth with three runs of their own to bring the margin to one. CMU collected 14 runs over the next three innings to put the game away 18-7. USF registered 12 hits and four errors while CMU tallied 24 hits and one error in the first game of the day. Daniel was 2-for-3 at the plate, including a triple and his homerun, with three RBI and one run scored while Angelberger tallied two RBI on his homerun. Senior Danny Otero was tagged with the loss, dropping his record to 3-2 this season. Game TwoIn the second game, USF scored first, notching 12 runs over the first three innings, overcoming the Chippewas’ seven runs scored in the second. The Bulls scored one in both the fifth and sixth, but the Chippewas matched with a pair of runs in the seventh. USF counteracted with five more runs in the seventh, to earn the 19-9 victory. Daniel was 4-for-5 with three RBI and four runs scored, including two doubles. Junior Brad Karns, who played in his first game since the season-opener, was 3-for-5 with a double in the first, and three RBI. Junior Charles Cleveland was also 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Senior Yuri Higgins earned his first win of the season with four strikeouts and giving up just two hits in 4.2 innings. USF next welcomes Stetson to Red McEwen Field on Tuesday, March 6 for the second of a three-date series with the Hatters. First pitch for the mid-week game is at 6 p.m. The final game of that series will be played in Tampa on April 10.
