(March 2, 2007) – University of South Florida junior Joey Angelberger blasted a two-run homerun in the seventh, but the Bulls could not overcome Central Michigan in a 6-2 loss Friday night at Red McEwen. In the seventh, sophomore Addison Maruszak reached on a third-strike passed ball, then scored when junior Joey Angelberger rocked a two-run bomb over the left field fence. The shot was Angelberger’s 11th homerun of his career, and USF’s second of the season. Maruszak and Angelberger accounted for the only two hits and runs of the game for the 9-3 Bulls. The Chippewas jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring five runs over the first six innings. The Bulls scored two in the bottom of the seventh to chip away at the CMU lead, and threatened to score again in the bottom of the eighth, but the Chippewas defense held the Bulls scoreless in the last two innings. In the eighth, junior Walter Diaz reached on an error, and junior Dexter Butler and senior Nick Cardieri walked to load the bases, but the Bulls couldn’t score any of the baserunners, dropping their second consecutive game of the 2007 season. Junior right-handed pitcher Daniel Thomas drops to 2-1 this season, giving up five hits in 4.1 innings pitched. Freshman Shawn Sanford came in for relief, striking out three and allowing one run in 3.0 innings. The Bulls and Chippewas meet again Saturday night at 6 p.m. at Red McEwen, then end the three-game series on Sunday at noon.
