Since the original thread is being stupid and won't let me post in it, I wanted to start a new one.  Here is what I wanted to add to the discussion:

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papajohns.com_Bowl

The Big East and Mid-American conferences will provide a team in alternating years with the MAC supplying the 2007 participant. In the event that a qualifying team cannot be provided, either an Big East or an at-large team will be selected instead.

So this means that unless the MAC cannot field at least one team with a .500 record or better, we are not going back to Birmingham.

Still, the MCCB was awesome the first year and Charlotte was great.  I'd love to go back there if we don't make it as far as I think we can.

Actually it depends on how far down on the pecking order this bowl is for the MAC in terms of the selection order...

Hmmm,

I have heard the MAC is the alternate conference, but I don't believe that the BE would cut 2 bowl games for 2007. We lose teh Texas Bowl for one year, I hope to hell they didn't drop the PJB because we'd be looking at meek numbers.

This is the current lineup (assuming wiki is wrong):

1) BCS

2) Gator/Sun

3) Meineke

4) Birmingham

5) International

Agreed.  However, Wiki has a definite answer about the PJB.  The Texas Bowl, on the other hand:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Bowl

The Big 12, Big East and Conference USA will be affiliated with the game, as well as Texas Christian University of the Mountain West. The 2006 matchup will feature teams from the Big 12 and Big East Conferences. Specific information regarding conference selection order will be released at a later date.

The above quote was taken directly from http://www.houstontexans.com/news/detail.php?PRKey=2736

So, as it stands now, we're probably looking at a possible return to Texas and not Birmingham.

our bowl tie ins are going to be a mess for the next few years because we had to negotiate them when we were considered left for dead, the good ones we have (sun/gator) were really only kept by alternating with the big 12 and using notre dame

if we keep improving and travel well, we will get a much better situation in 09 when these things are redone, until then we will just have to deal with BCS or bust

The Big East does not get the tie in with the Texas Bowl this year, that spot belongs to C-USA. We get it back in 2008, then CUSA gets it again in 2009.

Imagine this bowl line up:

BCS

Sun

Meineke

International

Texas --> CUSA

Birmingham --> MAC

Charlotte isn't looking that bad now in that scenario.

I seriously hope we drop that Sun Bowl deal in the future, El Paso flight arrangements are going to be pricey, no matter where you fly from.
