With apologies to Florida State and Miami, who both suffered through rebuilding years, South Florida is the second-best team in the football-crazy Sunshine State.

In only their sixth season in Division 1, Jim Leavitt’s Bulls capped a successful Big East campaign with a 24-19 upset of West Virginia in Morgantown. An 8-4 record earned the school its second straight bowl invitation, a remarkable achievement for a 10-year-old program.

USF’s best known player is freshman quarterback Matt Grothe, whose 3,102 yards of total offense includes 14 passes and nine runs for touchdowns. But the defense deserves a lot of credit, too. The Bulls finished second in the Big East in total defense - an impressive stat considering the conference includes national powers West Virginia, Louisville and Rutgers.

The Bulls are a 4-point favorite over East Carolina in tomorrow’s PapaJohns.com Bowl, and though the Pirates have shown remarkable improvement under coach Skip Holtz, they may be a year or two away from being a bowl team to be reckoned with. Lay it.
