USF Eager To Make Amends For Last Season's Bowl Loss

TAMPA - After laying a goose egg in a 14-0 loss against North Carolina State in last year's Meineke Car Care Bowl, the University of South Florida football team (8-4) is eager to make amends in the Papajohns.com Bowl against East Carolina (7-5) on Dec. 23.

"It's very important to have a better showing than last year," said CB Trae Williams, who is tied for fifth in the country with seven interceptions. "Last year as a team effort, we didn't play to the best of our abilities. So hopefully this time around we can go out and get a victory."

A win could go a long way in the Bulls' fight for national recognition

"It would look good not only for the school getting nine wins, but for recruiting and possibly being preseason ranked in the Top 25 next year," QB Matt Grothe said. "And a win [in the bowl] and a couple of losses in the Top 25 could bump us into the postseason Top 25. It's definitely a big game for us."

Added Coach Jim Leavitt, "We've never won a bowl game. We've never won in December. We haven't done those things; those are uncharted waters for us. With that being said, I think it's important going into next year. It's important for the seniors and how they finish out. It's important for where we want our program to be."
