(December 8, 2006) -- USF defensive end George Selvie has been named a second team Freshman All-American by The Sporting News, while quarterback Matt Grothe and linebacker Chris Robinson are honorable mention. Selvie, from Pensacola, Fla., becomes the highest rated Freshman All-American in USF history, surpassing the third team honors for Stephen Nicholas (2003) and Danny Verpaele (2004). Carlton Williams was an honorable mention choice in 2005.Selvie, 6-4, 255, led all USF down linemen with 76 tackles, including a team-high 12 for losses with 5.5 sacks. He also recovered two fumbles, including one for a touchdown in USF’s win over seventh-ranked West Virginia.Grothe, the Big East Rookie of the Year, led all freshmen quarterbacks in total offense through the season with 258.5 yards per game. He broke nearly all of Marquel Blackwell’s (1999) freshman quarterback records at USF, including passing yards, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.Robinson, from Bunnell, Fla., led USF with six sacks among his 26 tackles, and his four fumbles caused tied a school record. Two of his sacks led to two crucial fumbles, including Selvie’s touchdown return at West Virginia. Robinson also sealed USF’s win at UCF when he sacked Steven Moffett on a fourth down deep in USF territory in a seven point game.

Guest JulmisteForPrez Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 I think Grothe's TD to INT ration may have hurt him. Yes, because that was the only thing that really could have. It wasn't horrendous (especially considering the whole freshman thing), but some of that gets offset by his great rushing yardage and rushing TD's.Thought he's be more than an Honorable Mention, but that's still great!Congratulations! Proud to have him as our QB.

To mix Grothe in with all the other honorable mention QB scrubs is insulting.
