Replies Igor: “Could be raining.†And, then of course, it starts pouring. That pretty much summed up USF’s 56-46 loss to Richmond Tuesday: could be raining. Upsets are bound to happen to any team, but what was so surprising was that Richmond - picked to finish 12th in the 14-team Atlantic 10 Conference and an 11½-point underdog - controlled the game from the outset. And this was after USF needed double OT in its last game to outlast lowly Stetson. Back-to-back stinkers aren’t the way USF wants to head on its first road trip. However, Thursday’s visit to 1-10 Winston-Salem State, a former Division II team in its first year in Division I, should be nothing more than a gloried scrimmage (Winston-Salem State lost by 45 to Notre Dame last week). Besides not raining Tuesday, there was some other good news for USF. PG Chris Howard finally has an official target date for his return - Jan. 10 against Louisville in USF’s Big East home opener. That was the word he got after visiting his doctors in Gainesville Tuesday morning. Projected to be USF’s starter, Howard missed all of last season with a torn ACL only to suffer another torn ACL before this season. To say Howard is pumped to finally have an official return date is an understatement. Even without Howard, the Bulls’ schedule sets up for a 7-1 start - USF will be big favorites against Winston-Salem State, East Carolina and Norfolk State. Then the Bulls play five consecutive games - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UNLV, Missouri State, UAB and Wake Forest - that should give Bulls fans a more accurate read on this year’s team before entering Big East play.
