Grothe finishes as Top Freshman

Matt Grothe, the University of South Florida's quarterback from Lake Gibson High School, finished 12th in the nation in total offense and was the leading freshman in that category, according to the NCAA's regular-season football statistics.

In 12 games, Grothe ran for 607 yards and passed for 2,495 for a total of 3,102, or 258.5 yards per game.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Grothe finished second in the Big East Conference in total offense, third in passing and 10th in rushing. In leading the Bulls to an 8-4 season and a berth in the PapaJohn's Bowl on Dec, 23, he set a USF record for total yards in a single game (364 against Syracuse on Nov. 11) and a school freshman record for passing yards in a season.

The only other freshman among the top 20 in total offense is Dan LeFevour of Central Michigan, who finished 14th. Five of the 11 quarterbacks ahead of Grothe are seniors. Colt Brennan, a junior from Hawaii, is the national leader with 410.8 yards per game.
