Heard something on the radio after the game that put this stat into perspective in relation to doing it in our 10th year, as compared to the "Big 3".  Someone said that Florida didn't do it until Spurrier was the head coach, and FSU didn't do it until late in their history.   I was half listening and didn't catch the rest.

Is this accurate?  Did I hear it correctly?  Does anyone have a link to these stats or this story?

i dont know if it is or not...but honestly...we really need to stop comparing ourselfs to those programs.  i think college football was just a little different in 1950 then it is in 2006.

just be  happy with our program getting better every year.

You seem to be alluding to our win over WV not being as legitimate as when UF or FSU achieved the same accomplishment?....

Where do you draw the line as to when it is acceptable to compare USF accomplishments to those of the three big programs in FL?

Making bold statements such as this season USF could beat Miami or FSU and give UF a run for their money is one thing, but comparing their past achievements to our own is another.

I agree... comparing USF with FSU or UF from even the 1970's is not a good idea.

It is A LOT HARDER now that it was then...

Conference affiliations... The BCS... The 85/25 rule... recruiting visit restrictions... national television... academic requirements... pro-style offenses... speed speed speed... scheduling... etc.

Actually, all those things make it *easier* for an upstart program.

I'm not so sure about that.

Conference affiliations make it harder to schedule the "anyone anywhere" mode of FSU... The 85/25 rule and visit restrictions make it a harder to recruit players... National television contracts and the BCS made it harder to gain traction (the old rules would have been easier -- each team got one national game per year)... etc.

JMHO.

Well you're right about the conference affiliation, but I don't think so on the receruiting front. I think without certain rules, the powerhouses of history could just keep getting all the best players every year. Why did it take UF or FSU so long to rise to the top? Because they didn't start out as big names, so it was always an uphill battle recruiting. Now, those schools don't have time or resources to visit all the players who they could snag if they wanted to.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
