Guest Posted November 26, 2006 Posted November 26, 2006 Bonesville has an article saying the same thing, but says no invites have been handed out:Pizza Bowl for Pirates?By Denny O'Brien©2006 Bonesville.netAll Rights Reserved.RALEIGH  With its 21-16 win over rival N.C. State, East Carolina (7-5) guaranteed itself a spot in one of Conference USA's five guaranteed bowls. Though no invitations have been sent, it looks like ECU could make its second trip to Birmingham this year.According to one ECU official, the PapaJohns.com Bowl in Birmingham has shown a lot of interest in the Pirates and appears to be the most likely scenario. The game is played on Saturday, Dec. 23, on ESPN2 and is slated for a 1:00 p.m. (EST) kickoff. If the PapaJohns.com Bowl is indeed the Pirates' destination, they will face a Big East opponent, most likely either Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, or South Florida. This marks the inaugural season for the PapaJohns.com Bowl, and ECU is no stranger to launching postseason games. In 1999, the Pirates played in the first Mobile, Alabama Bowl (now the GMAC Bowl), and in 2000, they pummeled Texas Tech in the inaugural galleryfurniture.com Bowl (now the Texas Bowl). The PapaJohns.com Bowl marks the renewal of a postseason game for the Iron City. From 1977-90, Birmingham hosted the All-American Bowl.Southern Mississippi is playing in Houston next week for the C-USA Championship. Hard to see the Liberty Bowl not taking USM if the Eagles win. (Liberty gets first pick, and doesn't have to take the C-USA champs.)

There are a LOT of "casual" fans who are just starting to entertain the idea of trading in their "big 3" colors for green and gold. The biggest win in the program's history will get these people even more excited, and they may even consider attending a bowl game that is within driving distance in Alabama..................until they hear the announcement that USF's bowl game will be played against the mighty pirates of East Carolina. Kind of a buzzkill, dont ya think?I would expect about HALF of what we took to Charlotte last year if ECU is the opponent.
