LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -- Michael Redell made two free throws with 52 seconds remaining to put Western Michigan ahead for good, and the Broncos held on Thursday night for a 71-68 victory over Virginia Tech in the Old Spice Classic at Disney World.

Redell and Joe Reitz each scored 17 points and were a combined 18-for-22 from the foul line for Western Michigan (2-2). Redell's last two gave the Broncos a 69-68 lead, and Andrew Ricks added a pair of free throws for the final margin.

Virginia Tech's A.D. Vassallo missed three 3-point attempts in the closing seconds, the last one at the buzzer. The Hokies (2-1) also turned the ball over on one possession, trying to get it to Vassallo with a chance to tie it.

Jamon Gordon led Virginia Tech with 19 points on 9-for-11 shooting. Zabian Dowdell added 16 for the Hokies, who dropped to 0-5 all-time against Western Michigan.

The Broncos trailed by 11 with eight minutes left in the opening half, but whittled the deficit to 34-29 by halftime. They surged to a 60-52 lead with 7:33 remaining in the second half only to have Virginia Tech battled back to take a 68-67 lead on Vassallo's jumper six minutes later.

Vassallo, Virginia Tech's leading scorer through two games, finished with five points on 2-for-10 shooting.
