Ex-Eagle, USF Assistant Waters Dies

By BRETT McMURPHY The Tampa Tribune

Published: Nov 20, 2006

TAMPA - Former Philadelphia Eagles strong safety Andre Waters, regarded as one of the NFL’s most intense players, committed suicide early Monday morning at his Tampa residence.

Waters was 44 and died at 1 a.m. from a gunshot wound to the head, said Dr. Leszek Chrostowski, who performed an autopsy on Waters this afternoon. Waters played 12 seasons in the NFL – 10 with the Philadelphia Eagles (1984-93) and two with the Arizona Cardinals (1994-95).

He just completed his first season as defensive coordinator at Division II Fort Valley State in Fort Valley, Ga. He also had coaching stints at the University of South Florida, Morgan State, Saint Augustine’s College in Raleigh, N.C. and Alabama State.

He was the Eagles’ starting strong safety from 1986-93, leading Philadelphia in tackles in 1986-88 and 1991.

Rest in peace coach. You left us with a lot of good memories, and you still have my favorite Dallas Cowboys hat. Words can't describe the pain your former players and family feel for you right now. Wish one of us could have been there for you...

May we only remember the good memories and never remember today. We'll all say a prayer for you and your family tonight.

Respectfully,

Terry Lucas

Wow.  Talk about a shame.  What a tragedy.  He was always a good guy, every approachable.  I remember saying that he was so nice off the field, it is hard to believe that he was such a hitter on the field.  Also, well dressed.  Man, that sucks.  I am very sad to hear it.  My condolences to his family.
