Big East: Missed PAT Lets Hokies Escape Temple Upset Bid

PHILADELPHIA - Walter Washington scrambled for one big play after another Saturday during Temple's fourth-quarter rally. Then, one of the simplest plays cost the Owls a shot at one of the biggest wins in their history.

Virginia Tech quarterback Bryan Randall ran 23 yards for a touchdown in overtime and Temple missed an extra point on its matching TD, giving the Hokies a 24-23 victory.

"Ten years from now nobody's going to remember who won this game. They'll remember how they played in it," Temple coach Bobby Wallace said.

Temple overcome a 17-0 deficit in the fourth quarter and tied it on Jared Davis' 37-yard field goal with 40 seconds left.

Temple won the overtime coin toss and chose to play defense. Two plays later Randall ran 23 yards for the score.

Temple came right back when Washington found Zamir Cobb in the flat and Cobb used a big block to go 22 yards for the touchdown.

Davis, who was 18-for-20 on extra points before the final one, was wide left, setting off a wild celebration for the Hokies, who were nearly upset by Temple for the second time in five years.

"Who knows what would have happened in the next overtime? He didn't lose the game for us," Wallace said. "It ended the game, but there were other plays that could have been made."

With Virginia Tech leading 17-0, Washington threw a 13-yard touchdown to Umar Ferguson. Later in the fourth, Washington's 34-yard run to the 1 set up a scoring run by Ferguson on the next play.

W. VIRGINIA 52, PITT 31: Rasheed Marshall never had a chance when he and Pitt's Rod Rutherford were opposing high school quarterbacks. In college, that has all changed.

Marshall outplayed his longtime rival in the Backyard Brawl for the second straight season, throwing two touchdowns and running for another to lead the host Mountaineers. Quincy Wilson rushed for 208 yards and four touchdowns for West Virginia.

Rutherford, whose Pittsburgh high school team beat Marshall's three consecutive years, got off to a big start, throwing touchdowns to Larry Fitzgerald of 23 and 45 yards.

But Rutherford was intercepted three times in the second half, once early in the back of the end zone by linebacker Grant Wiley.

The Mountaineers didn't score off that turnover, but did off the next two. Rutherford was intercepted by Lawrence Audena on Pitt's next possession, leading to Marshall's go-ahead 12-yard scoring run five plays later.

BOSTON COLLEGE 35, RUTGERS 25: Paul Peterson threw a go-ahead 17-yard touchdown with 5:54 to play and Derrick Knight rushed for 224 yards and three scores for the visiting Eagles.

Ryan Sands, who kicked three field goals for the Scarlet Knights, missed a 43-yarder with 1:32 to play and Boston College up 28-25.

Sands gave Rutgers a 25-20 lead with a 41-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Peterson, who was 17-of-26 for 244 yards, drove the Eagles 69 yards in six plays, hitting Larry Lester for a 17-yard touchdown on third and 8 with just under six minutes to play. He added a two-point conversion to Joel Hazard.

Not included was UConn's dismantling of Wake Forest.

A quick look at this years' results shows that the "new ACC" is only 9-7 in games vs the "new Big East" this year, with two to play. Hardly the domination I would expect from such a superior league. :
