Nate Harris was right.

That's what Miami quarterback Kyle Wright said after the University of Louisville football team dispatched his Hurricanes 31-7 yesterday.

Wright and his teammates used Harris' words as motivation after the U of L linebacker said the Miami program wasn't living up to what it used to be. The Hurricanes answered by gathering at midfield and stomping on the Cardinal bird logo during warmups, nearly igniting a brawl.

But U of L got the last word.

"Obviously, Nate Harris' quote was right," Wright said. "You never win off swagger. It's all nice to jump at midfield on the logo, but if you don't go out and take care of business, it's nothing. It's fake hype, and I'm tired of it."

U of L didn't allow Harris to do any interviews after he made his comments on a Monday teleconference, but the Miami native appeared at the Cardinals' postgame news conference.

"My teammates came out and backed up what I said," said Harris, who went over to Wright and told him to keep his head up after the game.

Not a full 60 minutes

The first half of the game was about 2½ minutes too short, thanks to an error by the Atlantic Coast Conference officiating crew.

Miami called a timeout with 3:31 left in the first quarter and U of L at the Hurricanes' 3-yard line. The scoreboard clock then switched into countdown timer mode for the timeout. At the end of the timeout, officials instructed the clock operator to put 1:05 on the clock. The Cards ran three more plays to finish the quarter.

It's the job of the back judge to keep tabs on the clock. Time rulings are open for challenge by coaches, but U of L's staff didn't challenge this one.

Series to continue?

U of L has had trouble scheduling big-time opponents, but athletic director Tom Jurich said yesterday that Miami could remain on the schedule for a while.

"I appreciate Miami for scheduling home-and-home with us, and (Miami athletic director) Paul Dee has said they want to extend it," he said. "I talked to him, and he said they want to play and make it a long-term series."

This was U of L's first victory in 11 meetings with Miami. There has been one tie.

Flannery comes up big

Breakdowns in the punting game cost U of L dearly against Miami two years ago, particularly when punter Brent Moody -- now at Florida State -- kicked to speedy Devin Hester, who returned it for a pivotal touchdown.

Yesterday Todd Flannery had his best day. His three punts averaged 50.7 yards and netted an average of 43.3. He also boomed his kickoffs. He had two touchbacks, and his average kickoff was 63.5 yards -- about to the 2-yard line.

"Todd had a big part in the win," coach Bobby Petrino said. "He changed field position a couple of times with some great punts."

Bush makes appearance

Injured running back Michael Bush came out of the locker room with the team, trailing the other players on his crutches. He also spoke to the team before the game and at halftime.

"Even when he's there as a motivator, it helps us," center Eric Wood said.

Bush was greeted in the end zone by the U of L men's basketball team. Sophomore Terrence Williams wore a No. 19 jersey with the words "Get well soon" airbrushed on it.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
