HIGHS AND LOWS: After accounting for three touchdowns in the opener, quarterback Matt Grothe wasn't as sharp in his first start Saturday, completing 15 of 28 passes for 174 yards and one score. He threw two interceptions Saturday in a 21-20 win against FIU, one of which was returned 14 yards for a touchdown by Robert Mitchell.

Leavitt said senior Pat Julmiste warmed up in the second half, but he stuck with Grothe because he's trying to build consistency in his redshirt freshman quarterback.

"Everybody was hyped up about how he did last week, and I didn't say too much," Leavitt said. "How good a player is is consistency over time. . . . I'm not going to get all down on him, or when he does real good things, I'm not going to get so overjoyed.

"You have to have a steady keel, to stay grounded and focused."

Real glad that he stayed with GrothE also ... and it turned out to be the right choice.

He didn't have a very good game, that one INT was costly. The other was miscomminication with Amarri.

Still had 58% and the winning TD pass.

Hoping for a GREAT game from him Saturday ... and better RB output!

Most of us agreed that it would be better in the long run to strugle with Matt this year and let him learn than to strugle with PJ and break in a new QB next year.

If we can't run the ball next saturday it won't matter what Matt does.
