Jones is joined by guard Atlas Herrion of Alabama, tackle Jason Hilliard of Louisville and linebacker Kevin Jackson of Hawaii. Previously, it was reported that the Packers signed tight end Keith Willis of Virginia Tech and quarterback Scott McBrien of Maryland.

Jones, 6 feet 0 1/2 and 242 pounds, was signed to play the weak side in Green Bay. He started on the strong side in 2001 and '02 for South Florida before moving to the middle in '03, when he led the Bulls in tackles with 116. He had 12 1/2 sacks in all.

"Plays hard," San Francisco 49ers scout John Brunner said. "Not real instinctive. He's a slow reactor. Big kid. Not bad speed."

At the combine, Jones ran 40 yards in 4.68 seconds, had a 35 1/2-inch vertical jump and put up 225 pounds on the bench press 26 times.

Herrion, 6-3 1/2 and 300, played two years at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College. He started one game in '01, was moved to defensive line as a redshirt in '02 and then was moved back to the offensive line in '03.

As a senior, Herrion had three starts at left tackle, two starts at left guard and played extensively off the bench at right tackle.

Hilliard, 6-6 and 330, redshirted in 1999 and was a backup tackle the last four seasons. He can play left and right tackle.

Jackson, 6-3 1/2 and 240, played defensive end at Hawaii but is projected to strong-side linebacker in Green Bay. He started only three of 47 games and finished with 61/2 sacks.

Dates set

Veteran players will undergo physical testing today as a weeklong minicamp opens in Green Bay.

Veterans will practice starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday on Hinkle Field, weather permitting. If the fields are wet, practice will move inside the Hutson Center and will be closed to the public.

Rookies will join the veterans for full-squad practices Friday and Saturday. The morning workout starts at 10:30 a.m. and the afternoon workout starts at 2:45 p.m.

The minicamp will close Sunday with a practice at 9:30 a.m. for rookies and selected veterans.

A second minicamp is scheduled for early June. Practices are scheduled for June 1-4 and June 7-11.
