Status quo at the QB spot.  Oh, and welcome temporary DB coach Terrell Buckley.

USF Quarterback Battle Is Even

Published: Aug 25, 2006

TAMPA With a week until the University of South Florida's Sept. 2 season opener against McNeese State, senior Pat Julmiste and freshman Matt Grothe are even in the battle for the starting quarterback position.

And if they remain even during the coming week, Julmiste will get the starting nod, USF coach Jim Leavitt said.

"If the're all about the same Pat will [start]," Leavitt said. "If one is clearly better than the other, then he'll go. It's not a hard decision from my standpoint."

FAN DAY: The Bulls host their annual Fan Appreciation Day at 11 a.m. today. Fans can watch the final 30 minutes of practice from 11-11:30 a.m. at the practice fields north of the Sun Dome and USF softball fields. Afterwards, coaches and players will be available for autographs and photos.

ODDS AND ENDS: Freshman RB Keeley Dorsey is awaiting NCAA Clearinghouse approval and didn't practice Friday. ... QB Grant Gregory, who separated his left (nonthrowing) shoulder last week, has returned to full drills. He also is battling a thumb injury on his right hand. ... WR Amp Hill (ankle) was off crutches and in full pads but didn't participate in any early drills. ... Former NFL CB Terrell Buckley, who was a teammate of USF WR coach Lawrence Dawsey at Florida State, attended practice and gave pointers to the defensive backs.

Great news about Hill ... glad he's fine.

Regarding QB's ... I would assume that PJ will start and that GrothE will get equal time ... and maybe the same deal with FIU ... would imagine that week 3 we will have a definate named starter for the next 2 games after that.

Hope Gregory's thumb gets better for McNeese St.

I have no idea why Leavitt  cannot see that. It is not like Pat has ever tore it up. Please play Grothe bunches in the 1st two blowouts...

GROTHE is the FUTURE...........

Of course, I agree about GrothE being the future and that future starts on 9-2-06.

But I am not as much a PJ basher as many here ... PJ is a "good" QB. Consistancy is the biggest default ... sometimes game to game but sometimes too often, it's during the game.

PJ's good games:

  • Penn St - 21 of 35 for 200 Yards 2 TD's 1 INT
  • FAMU was a running game, but he was 6 of 10 for 70 yards & no INT's
  • UCF about the same with 10 of 16 & 1 TD
  • L'ville and UM were not good for him.
  • Pitt was a strange game, 18 of 35 with 222 yards & 1 TD & no INT's
  • Rutgers, 13 of 21 for 135 and no INT's
  • Syracuse was bad.
  • Cincy was 12 of 22 for 155 and no INT's
  • UConn was ugly, but BULLieve 2 of the 3 INT's were tipped.
  • No need to discuss WVU & Bowl Game.

Interesting that 2 of his bad games were WINS, L'ville & 'cuse.

From what I have seen in PJ and what I expect from GrothE and what coaches are telling us - that they are essentially equal ... I feel very good about GrothE getting better and being a winner for us starting Game 3.

Hey, Grothe is a RS fresh. tied with a 5th year Sr. ya gotta like that, I guess, but it gives CJL a reason to honor a SR. as brief as it might be. Grothe will take over by the 3rd game if not before! I still really dont think they are all even. but who am I? that is the best answer to not piss off either one.  but in CJL we trust!! he will make the right call I know it!!  GO BULLS!!!

And I am hoping that each play a series at a time ... would seem to be equal time with similiar situations in the first half. Then let the better of the two start the 2nd half.

Seems like a plan - will send an email off to The Jim.  8-)

Guest BasketBull.

I think QB-ing will be much better this year due to better protection and an upgrade in the receiving corps.

But whoever's in there at QB, we've got to be able to throw slants and in the middle. Those rainbows are nice and safe, but they don't loosen defenses. 8-9 in the box all year and we can forget it...
