USF: Tackle role in flux

TAMPA - Coach Jim Leavitt said tackle Danny Tolley, who is trying to become a starter, sat out many of this week's drills with a pelvic injury. The redshirt freshman has dressed out for practice, but Leavitt said the staff is concerned with what his outcome will be.

"Danny is a wonderful person and really wants to play," Leavitt said. "We want to make sure he's completely healthy before we put him back in. He's committed to getting back in there."

Sophomore Marc Dile and junior Jared Carnes filled in at the two tackle positions in the Wesley Chapel High graduate's absence.

Waiting: Leavitt said he will wait a few more weeks before deciding who will redshirt this season. That includes deciding on defensive tackle Tavarious Robinson. The senior, who had 20 tackles and 21/2 sacks in 2005, is in the mix to become a starter on the defensive line.

Bull bits: There is a scrimmage at 9 a.m. today - the team's first of fall practice. ... Walk-on defensive back Fred Marshall, a junior from Largo, left the team after one practice. ... Walk-on linebacker Josh Soto, a freshman from Coral Gables, has joined the team.
