South Florida Goes 0-For-Draft Day One

By GREGG BECNEL Tribune correspondent

Published: Apr 25, 2004

TAMPA - Not surprising, the first three rounds of the NFL draft came and went Saturday without a South Florida Bull being among the 96 players selected.

With the final four rounds set to begin this morning at 11, linebacker Maurice Jones, safety J.R. Reed and receiver Huey Whittaker are hoping to be one of the 159 picks that will be made today.

``We're just waiting. I've prepared Maurice about the process and he's OK with everything,'' Jones' agent Chad Wiestling said. ``We thought there was a chance he could slip into Day One, but the good thing is there was a lot of linebackers [14] taken Saturday.

``Every team and every scout I've talked to said this was a good draft for linebackers. So with a lot of linebackers off the board, wherever Maurice is on the ladder, he'll move up.''

Reed's agent Jonathan Kline, who flew from South Florida to Tampa to be with Reed and his family for the draft, said Reed was ``very calm'' as the first day of the draft unfolded.

``Going in, we heard J.R. could go anywhere between the third and fifth round, so we'll just have to see what happens [today],'' Kline said.

Reed, USF's career interceptions leader, didn't have a lot of time to mull over when and who might choose him. He attended the USF athletic auction and senior recognition night Saturday.

``I reminded him to keep his cell phone on, just in case,'' Kline said.

To be sure, all three will stay close to their televisions and cell phones today

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
