USF Practice Report

Leavitt Remains Confident In Quarterbacks Without Naming A Starter

TAMPA, FLA. (August 17, 2006) -- USF head coach Jim Leavitt isn't

showing any concern about who his starting quarterback will be on

September 2 when the Bulls open the season. After today's practice, he

reiterated his stance that if everything is equal returning starter Pat

Julmiste with get the nod over redshirt freshman Matt Grothe and Indiana

transfer Grant Gregory.

Asked how the repetitions were being split by the three, Leavitt

responded flatly. "I don't know and I don't care," he said. "I have

confidence in all three guys. And I wish I could get more reps for

Anthony Severino, because in the reps he has, he has looked good."

Leavitt also showed no concern over starting middle linebacker Ben

Moffitt, who has been practicing with a cast on his left hand. "Ben

doesn't know the word easy," Leavitt said. "He doesn't know how to take

it easy. He always goes all out. I can't keep him off the field if I

want to. He hasn't slowed down a bit this week,"

The team will have two practices Friday before the first full-scale

scrimmage Saturday morning. The scrimmage will be closed, but Leavitt

will be available at the conclusion, which is expected to be close to 11

a.m.

Well ... I hope this is good news ... never know what Leavitt is thinking. It is only 15 more days to see the real deal ... the first 2 games should tell us ALOT about who MAY started for the remainder of the season will be.

Big Ben is just such a Special Football Player!

I'm sick and tired of this.

I wish a reporter would follow up that statement with "Why? If both are EQUAL, why NOT start the QB with untapped potential instead of the one who has reached his potential.......IF they are in fact equal?"

The ONLY reason Leavitt has given us is leadership. The same leadership that lead the Bulls to a 10-13 record as a starter.

Calma Shoop ... it doesn't really amtter at this point what he says ... or what the reporter would ask ... what kind of answer do you think we would get.

By Game 3 ... we will have legit chat.

And that challenge may happen  8-)

Leavitt has been pleased with his quarterbacks, but it's still senior Pat Julmiste's job. "If everything's even, Pat's going to be the guy," Leavitt said. "Somebody is going to have to unseat him and make it very clear."

I am trusting that all will not be even.  8-)

Yeah, he probably would just give us "coach speak", but it would make ME feel a whole lot better, and damnit that's the point!  :)

if it is even why not start the guy who may lead you the next 3 years?

why not get ready for the future?

Yea it is very stressful on me I wish I know but will know soon enough. Even if they start Pat thats ok with me because He will be on a very short leash and in comes Matt. As I have said Matt needs to get some good reps in all three first games!

That leash will go both ways unfortunately... ask Courtney Denson last season.

What kills me is the fact that we've seen Pat's play the last three years, Matt was 2nd to Mr. Florida (if I'm correct), yet he hasn't clearly beat out PJ. Is it bad coaching that Matt hasn't passed PJ? Has PJ gotten that much better? Or did Matt come from an overrated class that season?

Flipflop... you care more as this is your son, but we're just trying to be realistic at this point. PJ has been dreadful the previous three seasons. Leavitt is basically begging someone to step up and take the position. The question is whether Matt is performing well enough in practice to pull it off. Our defense has made many QB's look bad at times (even Marquel had his days). It makes you wonder if Matt is getting the same reps as PJ with the 1st team. When the 1st team defense is going against the 2nd team offense, they normally would shut us down.
