(August 12, 2006) – After the first of two practices for the University of South Florida today, Jim Leavitt addressed the current quarterback situation, saying their play is “inconsistent, but they are working hard.â€ÂLeavitt went on to say, “If they’re all equal, Pat (Julmiste) will start.†Of today’s work at quarterback, Leavitt said, “Pat looked good. Matt (Grothe) was shaky at the start but he did some good things in the scrimmage work at the end. And I’m surprised out how well Grant (Gregory) is doing because he worked at defensive back all spring. Anthony Severino did some good things in the snaps he took.â€ÂOn the overall status of summer camp, Leavitt said, “We still have a lot of work to do. We’re not ready today.â€ÂThe team will have an afternoon practice at 3:45 p.m., with meetings and a short walk through on the schedule Sunday. Monday brings another two-a-day schedule with practices at 8:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.

This is true coach speak. All he said was "We're not ready today". No team is ready today.Keep in mind that unlike last year where we had to get ready to face PSU in week one, we have to play Mcneese State. Of course we still need to play the games, but the 2 less competitive teams will allow more time to gel and for everything come together. He said Pat looked good. That wasn't a negative in any way. Plus, the practice is closed. He is only going to tell the media what he wants them (and opponents) to think. otherwise the practicew would be open if he wanted details to be out. There is plenty of time to improve things.

Even Leavitt said something to the effect that coaches should not make evaluations about players in the first couple of days of practive. They were both made in the 1st week of practice and basically said the same thing...
Guest R_to_the_izzo
I just hope CJL picks one and sticks with him. "If you have two qb's you have none". We won't win games if he plays it by the drive, just look at PSU, UM, UConn.
Guest
I was at USF for the graduation ceremonies today -- for the Alumni Association -- and decided to check out a little practice.Albeit from quite a ways away... outisde the fence along Sycamore Drive (by the recycling area, if you know campus).Anyway, one of the drills looked like QBs and receivers against the defensive backs - running routes and timing throws. Within two minutes of my arrival Matt GrothE threw two consecutive interceptions. It appeared that he was telegraphing his throws -- something I noticed during the spring game. He over or under threw a few other times - including over-leading receivers across the middle (about 20 yards downfield) a few times.PJ - for what it is worth - looked very good. Only one time did he not connect with his intended target while I was watching.Grant Gregory actually looked better than GrothE while I was watching. In the 15 minutes or so I was there, at least three 'fights' broke out. Which is actually a GREAT sign. These guys are REALLY fired up and showing it. All three times it looked like a "bench clearing" issue as the offense and defense players participating in this drill would gather together, point fingers, yell a little bit, and then separate. Did I mention these guys are REALLY fired up?The other drill I saw was some one-on-one and two-on-one defensive line vs offensive line players. They were really hitting each other, and showing some great energy. So, I realize it is not the same kind of report from a reporter or the great pics from MikeG ... but this was the first non-FAD practice I got to see... even if it was more than 500 feet away. Leavitt's statment said "They are not ready TODAY" To me, that's a huge difference. Not being ready to be the Starter means neither player has a grasp of the system and is not ready to be the leader of the offense. Leavitt clearly stated that neither was not "ready today". That's why I felt it was a bizarre statement for Smith to make.

Guest
How did you get around the high tech security system?? I parked my car and walked up. Seriously, though, if you know the old intramural fields, they were on the field closest to the Athletic Facility, I was on the opposite side - along Sycamore Drive. They have a green fabric covering the fence, but I am just tall enough to see over it. There were two other guys there already -- not sure who they are. One of them had USF stuff on.
