So how does Cannon look?

Saw a little of new running back Shawn Cannon, from Highland Community College in Kansas, whose arrival came as Walt Smith missed practice with what Leavitt said was academic issues he had to clear up befoer he could return to playing.

Cannon was in shorts today -- all players have a "climatization" period in the first days of practice where they go to shoulder pads and then full pads. I don't think he'll be full-go until Monday or Tuesday. That said, he might be the biggest of USF's backs -- he told me he was at 202 pounds last week -- so he's more of a power runner.

I was watching a sled drill from the backs this morning -- just running straight at a sled, taking it low with the non-ball shoulder and driving forward, and Cannon did as well with that as anyone except perhaps Ponton, who is also a strong runner. Cannon's high school coach at Cantonment Tate raved about him, and Cannon told me he's always been a north-south bowl-you-over type running back. Hope that helps -- I had left it kind of hanging on the blog, I suppose ...
