Foot injury sidelines UNC safety Goddard for season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Starting North Carolina strong safety Trimane Goddard will miss the 2006 season with a foot injury, the school announced Tuesday.

The 5-11, 192-pound Goddard, a junior, will redshirt this season after fracturing the fifth metatarsal in his left foot over the weekend. He will undergo surgery on his foot Wednesday.

Goddard played in all 11 games for the Tar Heels last season, starting the final six. He had 53 tackles and a team-best three interceptions for North Carolina, which went 5-6, including 4-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Goddard originally suffered the injury in February, requiring surgery that prevented him from participating in spring football, then aggravated it while pushing off in a non-impact flexibility exercise Saturday.

"I'm disappointed for Trimane, his teammates and his family," Tar Heels coach John Bunting said. "Trimane is a great person on and off the field and he was excited about the upcoming season. He's a tough kid who made big plays for us and he will be missed."
