Baseball coach happy to stay at Florida

By BRANDON ZIMMERMAN

Sun sports writer

July 01. 2006 6:01AM

LSU athletic director Skip Bertman was busy working the phones prior to hiring Paul Mainieri as the Tigers new baseball coach on Wednesday.

Turns out, one of the calls he made about the vacant coaching position was to Florida head coach Pat McMahon.

Thanks, but no thanks, was McMahon's response.

"I'm happy here at Florida," McMahon said.

McMahon, who is 203-113-1 in five seasons at UF, currently has four years remaining on a contract extension he signed in October after leading the Gators to a national runner-up finish. The extension boasted McMahon's salary from $125,000 to $157,613 per year. McMahon originally signed a five-year deal when he was hired on June 13, 2001.

McMahon, however,

wasn't the only coach to receive a call from LSU, according to published reports.

Those reportedly contacted were Ole Miss' Mike Bianco, Alabama's Jim Wells, South Carolina's Ray Tanner, Vanderbilt's Tim Corbin, Georgia's David Perno, Cal-State Fullerton's George Horton and College of Charleston's John Pawlowski.

Mainieri, who coached Notre Dame for 12 seasons, replaces Smoke Laval, who resigned last month after LSU failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 18 years.
