USF Women’s Basketball Standout Jessica Dickson Named To Young All-America Team By Gballmag.com

Tampa, FL (April 21, 2004) – USF women’s basketball standout Jessica Dickson (Ocala, FL) has been named to the inaugural Gballmag.com Young All-America Team as one of the nation’s top 10 freshmen during the 2003-04 campaign.

A 5-11 forward who played her scholastic ball at Vanguard High School, Dickson finished her rookie campaign as the top scoring freshman in America averaging 18.6 points per game which was also third in Conference USA. In addition she averaged 6.1 rebounds per outing, which was also good enough for second on the team.

She scored in double figures in 26 of her 29 games this year – and 12 games of 20 or more points – and ended the season netting 540 points. That total was a new Conference USA and USF freshman scoring record and is the second most points scored in a single season for the Bulls.

Dickson set a C-USA freshman single game scoring record on February 2 when she poured in a career high 36 points in a thrilling 89-84 double-overtime win over No. 18 TCU at the Sun Dome. She hit a 40-foot shot from near mid-court to send the game into the second extra session then proceeded to score nine points in the second overtime to secure the win.

For her efforts this season, Dickson was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year and was a second team All-C-USA selection. She was also named to the league’s All-Freshman team and last Sunday, at the team’s post-season banquet, was named USF’s Offensive Player of the Year.

“I am very proud of Jessica and the accomplishments that she achieved this season,†said USF’s head women’s basketball coach Jose Fernandez. “She has a great career ahead of her and we’re delighted that she is receiving this well deserved national recognition.â€Â

The Bulls finished the season with a 14-15 record – 7-7 in Conference USA (8th) – and advanced to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament for the first time in school history facing Richmond in the first round.

The 2004-05 campaign will be USF’s last in Conference USA. The Bulls will move into the BIG EAST prior to the 2005-06 season.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
