'Bama's on Gulf QB's mind

Alton Voss will try to land a scholarship from the SEC school this week.

NEW PORT RICHEY - Jay Fulmer's Ford F-150 sloshed its way through Florida's soaked interstates Monday, forcing him off the road a few times for safety's sake.

At his side sat his prized Gulf quarterback, Alton Voss. With an unfazed stare, he soaked in the landscape as the four-wheel drive monster left a wake along Interstate 65 in Alabama.

As the pair cruised within 50 miles of Tuscaloosa, Voss felt unsettled, sensing he was nearing his destination. This trip could define his football career.

Voss is in Tuscaloosa today to show Crimson Tide coaches he has the arm and the brains to be Alabama's next quarterback. He hopes to take home at least one souvenir.

"I want an offer from Alabama," Voss said. "That's why I'm going."

Voss lists Alabama as his top choice followed by N.C. State, Mississippi State, USF and Auburn. He will meet with Alabama coaches today and work out at a football camp on campus.

If they leave Tuscaloosa without a scholarship offer, there is a contingency plan.

"If they like what they see they'll let us know," Fulmer said. "If they don't, we're going to go down to Auburn. We're going to make the most out of this trip. Both schools have seen him, but the people who need to see him haven't."

They also could visit Mississippi State.

Voss is likely to feel nervous until he throws on his helmet and steps on the field.

That's where he's at his best.

During Gulf's spring scrimmage in May, he demonstrated his soft passing touch on offense and an unforgiving defensive effort at safety where he made several key tackles and forced two turnovers.

Voss hopes to have his college plans settled before fall camp opens. He threw for almost 1,200 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as a junior. He also rushed for 1,029 yards and 12 touchdowns.

"I'm handling things," Voss said. "I'm a little nervous, only because it's Alabama."

Another Pasco County quarterback, Land O'Lakes senior Joe Weatherford, returned Monday from his second trip to Alabama in two weeks.

Weatherford returned without an offer though he did all he could to impress the Crimson Tide staff. He still lists his top choices in order as UCF, Ole Miss, Connecticut, Alabama and Louisville.

Weatherford completed 103 of 197 passes for 1,945 yards, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions as a junior.

"There were 10 quarterbacks up there that were real good," Weatherford said. "The main reason I went was to show the coaches how I throw. Coach (Mike) Shula has never offered a quarterback who hasn't thrown at his camp."

13 TD's and 12 int's??

Pass.

You may want to steer clear of passing, with a record like that  ;D

Bien or Josh would know better, but isn't Gulf more of a running/spread option team. I haven't seen much of them and what I have seen has been Voss.

I wouldn't put that much stock into his stats.

From what I've seen they like to throw the ball around a lot.  And if they dont throw it Voss can run it.  They have a great WR in Shawn Williamson (broken ankle in spring game) who I think could be a bigger prospect than Voss.  Ive seen him run sub-4.4's at two separate camps and thats at 6-foot-1 191 pounds.  He also has great hands, I talked to the coaches after the camps and they all thought he ran the best routes and caught everything in traffic.

Voss is a nice QB, but I wouldnt put him at the top of the list for USF.

Looks like PJ's stats, less about 10 TDs and we still manage to start him.

Beastie, thats what I noticed too.  He isn't exactly playing against the SEC West defenses with 12 picks and 13 TDS.  Not a very good ratio.  Reminds me of a current USF QB.......

Exactly, I went to Gulf for 3 years.  In reality it's a podunk school in a podunk town, playing against mediocre competition.  Pasco High or Brooksville may be the only solid competition in it's conference.  River Ridge High, Ridgewood and Hudson ain't scaring or preparing anybody.
