Rupp Among USF Coaching Candidates

A Tribune staff report

Published: Jun 8, 2006

Former University of Tampa coach Terry Rupp is among the applicants for the University of South Florida baseball coaching job.

Rupp, a Tampa native and current coach at Maryland, led UT to the Division II national title in 1998. He took over the Terrapins' program in 2000 and has gone 359-268, including a 26-30 mark this season.

Rupp could not be reached for comment.

Eddie Cardieri resigned as USF's coach after 21 years following the Bulls' 23-35 season, their first in the Big East.

Other applicants included former Indiana coach Bob Morgan, former East Carolina coach Randy Mazey, Clemson associate head coach Kevin O'Sullivan, Florida Atlantic associate head coach John McCormack and St. Petersburg College coach David Pano. The deadline to apply is Tuesday.

I mentioned Kevin O'Sullivan a while ago:  http://www.thebullspen.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1147723182

Rupp has had a bad situation at Maryland and was expected to win right away at a northern program. Not to mention Maryland does not fund it well at all.

I don't think he'll be hired, but you can see how hard it is to make the transition from DII to DI.

Backgorund on each guy:

Bob Morgan: 1044 Career victories. COached at IU for 22 seasons before stepping down because a little decline in the program. He made IU into a solid northern program, and won their 1st Big 10 and only NCAA tourny Victory in 1996.

Randy Mazey: Three years at ECU, included coaching expierences at Tennessee and Clemson. He went to the NCAA Regionals all three years and had 50 wins in 2004. Just to note he was suspended and resigned by ECU for the 2006 season, the exact reason was never released.

John McCormack: 14 years at FAU as recruiting coordiantor. National Assistant coach of the year in 2004. Has brought in several good classes including one that gave them a 54-9 record in 1999, which included a top 10 ranking nationally heading into NCAA regional play.

Kevin O'Sullivan: Is a lot like Shouppe, he is the pitching coach and has served as Clemson's recruiting coordinator for a few years. Went to Virginia and coached one year in the minors. For those who don't follow college baseball Clemson was the number 1 team going into Regionals.

Dan Pano: Has won a FCCAA state championship a few times. For what it is worth, he has been considered one of the best JC recruiters in the state and his team has been to State Tournament 9 times.

It's Friday, is it 5 yet?

PS - I'm still with Shouppe, but if O'Sullivan has applied and Shouppe hasn't we have to take this guy, he's young and a great recruiter.

Dave Pano has some issues with chasing the ladies around on campus...

I used to HATE Terry Rupp....I can still see him playing basketball for U Tampa and getting the job done on the floor.  At the time, we played them and I think they may have beaten us one year with him on the floor.  I better look into that one....

I would welcome him now!
