has USF on his short list.  Our man Greg ran into dad Phil Simms speaking with CJL at the Athletic office on Wednesday.   An early verbal would be very nice and will really get the attention of other blue-chippers.

Simms City: Another QB in Tampa?

So I'm walking through the football office in USF's athletic facility on Wednesday afternoon, and sure enough, there's longtime Giants quarterback Phil Simms chatting it up with Jim Leavitt.

This is the kind of stuff that can make even June interesting for a college football writer: the Bulls are very much in the hunt for Simms' younger son, Matt, a rising senior at Don Bosco Prep in northern New Jersey. Matt wasn't along for Wednesday's visit, but his father's presence -- along with his brother Chris' being in Tampa -- are encouraging signs for USF fans.

His brother isn't the only family tie that USF can boast. When the elder Simms played at Morehead State, some 30 years ago, one of the assistant coaches was Rich Rachel, now USF's cornerbacks coach. And if you're going to get paired with two generations of a family of quarterbacks, this isn't a bad family to do that with.

Matt Simms is 6-3, 195, completed 62 percent of his passes last year, passing for 2,800 yards and 30 touchdowns and earning all-state honors. He already has a bunch of offers, with Louisville, Tennessee, Arizona State and Boston College joining USF in his current short list.

As much as we made last fall about the Bulls' overload at quarterback, with the loss of recruit Alwan Lee, they'll now have just four on scholarship this fall: senior Pat Julmiste, sophomore Carlton Hill and freshmen Matt Grothe and Nate Allen. Makes more sense now that USF has been mentioned with so many of the area's top senior passers, from Alton Voss to Robert Marve and so on.

that would be good for us in many ways...if we get him it will show the nation we can recruit with the big boys and bring more interest here as well as a qb with some pedigree..and helps with recruiting out of state

Whoa!  That would be awesome if Simms decides to come to USF he would help bring in more top recruits.

Simms would be nice, but if we can get Jefferson's Garcia, that would be top notch.   Is Matt a righty or lefty?

I had heard this from a source very close to Jimbo a couple of months ago.  Of course I did not believe it, Hell we have not been able to recruit or get any QB in years.  Here is something else I heard in the same conversation, that Phil may be interested in joining the staff as QB or even the OC.  That may be the thing that would put us over the top and surely get him.  Now this source is very reliable, but I must say I did not ever pay a bit of attention the first time I hear this.  But after reading that Phil was talking with Jimbo and Matt is interested, that is why I am now posting this.  Of course this is all specuation.  But maybe just maybe

As nice as it is to have the kid on the team and the noterity it could bring. Living right next to your millionaire brother who is the starting QB for a potential playoff team in a city that treats Bucs football like a religion, would probably not be the ideal situation.

I think the distractions are too high. Phil has had a lot of control over Chris (basically made him choose Texas), I'm sure he'll have the same input with Matt.

PS - He's a righty.

Does Phil have eligibility left?   ;)
