TAMPA - Longtime NFL kicking coach and consultant Doug Blevins, a well-known motivational speaker, has applied for South Florida's vacant athletic director position. He is the 34th official applicant.

Chuck Neinas, head of the firm conducting the AD search, said he is on track to submit a list of finalists to the USF search committee for further review by mid May. The search committee has scheduled its second meeting, via teleconference, for 8 a.m. Monday.

"It's going quite well," Neinas said. "There is definitely a lot of interest."

UVa names No. 2 guy

Jon Oliver decides to leave Washington State to serve under Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage.

By DOUG DOUGHTY

THE ROANOKE TIMES

Jon Oliver, a former college basketball player and law graduate, has been named by Virginia to fill the position of senior associate athletic director that came open when Craig Littlepage was elevated to athletic director.

Virginia became the first ACC program with an African-American athletic director and, with Oliver's appointment, will be one of the few programs of its stature with minorities as its Nos.1 and 2 men's athletic administrators.

Oliver, who starts work at Virginia on Dec.1, has been at Washington State since 1995. He serves as one of three associate athletic directors under an athletic director and senior associate athletic director.

Oliver, 41, played basketball at Boise State in the 1980s and returned to get a bachelor's of science degree in 1994. He received a law degree from the University of Idaho in 1997.

"Jon Oliver is a talented and creative administrator and has done a wonderful job in all facets of his work at Washington State," Littlepage said in a prepared statement. "He has advanced quickly in his administrative career and the fact he was a student-athlete is beneficial."

Oliver operated his own business before returning to college. He worked in a variety of areas at Washington State, including compliance, business and facilities development.

"It is difficult for me describe the excitement I feel about joining the staff at the University of Virginia," Oliver said. "Craig Littlepage's vision for the future of Virginia's athletic program captured my attention from the first time I talked to him."

Interesting article mentioning Joe Hull concerning what Maryland is doing

"There's a little bit of a race going on," said Joe Hull, a senior associate athletics director overseeing the campaign. "Scholarships are critical in being competitive."

From the Maryland site concerning Joe Hull:

Joe Hull

Senior Associate Athletics Director/External Operations

Sixth Year

Joe Hull is in his sixth year at the University of Maryland following 12 years in various athletic fund-raising, ticketing and marketing capacities at North Carolina State University.

Hull was promoted to senior associate athletics director for external operations in June 2002 after serving in that role on an interim basis during the previous year. At Maryland, he oversees all fund-raising efforts for the Terrapins' athletic program. During his tenure, athletic fund-raising has increased by 500 percent. Hull also oversees the media relations and marketing offices in addition to the men's and women's tennis teams.

In addition, Hull serves as the project manager for the Comcast Center, the university's extraordinary new arena that opened in October 2002. His duties relevant to the arena process have included coordinating the efforts to find a naming gift, designing and managing a capital campaign to help fund arena construction, and working with the architects, construction manager and Maryland Stadium Authority to design and build the arena. Hull also serves as the athletic department's liaison for Phases II and III of the Gossett Football Team House expansion/renovation project.

Prior to his arrival in College Park, he was associate director of the NC State Student Aid Association (Wolfpack Club), which raises more than $7 million annually for athletic scholarships from its more than 14,000 members/contributors. The Wolfpack Club also was responsible for raising more than $50 million for the construction of a 20,000-seat sports arena through a campaign designed by Hull.

Hull earned his bachelor's degree in business management from North Carolina State University in 1978 and played four years of collegiate golf for the Wolfpack while earning ACC Honor Roll status. He also earned a law degree from Campbell University in 1981 and a master's in sports administration from Ohio University in 1985.

His wife, JoAnn, formerly served as an assistant attorney general.

#35 Jamie Baringer, assistant general manager of JRV Management in Ohio

Here is something on that Company:

Overview

Founded in 1986, JRV Management has established itself as a leader in the development, planning and management of first-class facilities, projects and programs. With demand throughout the sports facility management industry, owners and organizations contract JRV to plan and develop successful recreational facilities.

JRV has earned global recognition in helping individuals, communities, municipalities, colleges and professional organizations understand and identify their needs and requirements when planning, constructing or renovating a state-of-the-art facility. From feasibility studies to program definition, JRV has prepared the groundwork for hundreds of successful facilities across the globe. Additionally, JRV manages these valuable properties for owners implementing "theory-to-practice" as they provide a standardized operation based on the ownership's business objectives.

Management

Many of JRV's consulting efforts evolve into facility management contracts. By building or renovating a first-rate facility, JRV is often times asked to assume the day-to-day management responsibilities -- including employee hiring and training, procedural documentation and implementation, program scheduling, equipment purchases, ongoing fund-raising efforts, as well as marketing initiatives such as advertising, event planning and public relations, in order to increase community participation.

Proper facility management is key in ensuring that an arena remains profitable. By employing a number of innovative tactics, JRV has turned around many facilities with previous financial or operational needs.

JRV currently manages the operations at:

Alice Noble Ice Arena (Wooster, Ohio)

Center Ice Sports Complex (North Canton, Ohio)

Monroe Multi-Sports Complex (Monroe, MI)

Mount Clemens Ice Arena & Fitness Center (Mount Clemens, MI)

Taylor Sportsplex (Taylor, MI)

JRV will also assist with the opening of new venues by providing operational staff, policies and procedures.
