MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia backup quarterback Adam Bednarik will miss the 2006 season after having shoulder surgery earlier this month, coach Rich Rodriguez said.

"I talked to him about a week ago, but I wanted to wait to get a doctor's opinion," Rodriguez said Monday.

Bednarik, a sophomore last year who was the starter until midseason, missed spring practice because his shoulder had not healed as well as anticipated. He already has used up his redshirt season and will be a senior in 2007.

"Obviously he wants to play, but it's like he told us before, it really didn't feel right all (last) year," Rodriguez said. "He just never felt he had the arm strength or the zip on the ball."

The loss of Bednarik means redshirt freshmen Nate Sowers and Jarrett Brown will enter fall camp as the top prospects for the backup job behind starter Pat White.

"It gives us a little sense of urgency to get those guys ready, obviously," Rodriguez said. "And it probably gives them more a sense of urgency to get themselves ready."

Last year's third-string quarterback, J.R. House, is now playing for the Houston Astros' Class AA affiliate, and redshirt freshman T.J. Mitchell decided to transfer.

This could be big news if something happens to Pat White during the season.  You never know what will happen to a starting QB, especially one that runs the ball as frequently as White and is prone to getting hit.

That's not good news for WV.  If White goes down then their season will fall on RS freshmen that probably don't know much yet.

Of course...it's good news for us if White goes down during our game.  ;D  Shouldn't be that bad for them either since the game is all the way in Nov 25th.

The only way I'd want pat white out is something stupid that wont hurt his career, but causes him to miss the game against us.  Something like oversleeping and missing the game, drinking too much the night before, or getting super emotionally depressed after his girlfriend dumps him.  Something like that.  I'd never wish a player to actually get hurt.  That's not what the sport is about.

This really Hurts WVU, as great as Pat White is, he is not the passer Bednarik is. In fact Bednarik was still used in many close games including Louisville to help the passing situation a lil more.

I didn't expect him to get much time under center next season, however, his arm was definitly a presence on the bench he was a great passer last year.

White was a Fr last season.  Their FR this season may be studs as well.  If we beat WV I want to beat them with White.  If we lose to them I want to lose to them with White.

Well, WHO IS OUR QB? Did spring give us any definitive answers?

Grothe or Hill or P (he needs to be a TE) J?
