South Florida ends Owls' run

GAINESVILLE · Florida Atlantic saw its season come to an end with a 7-4 loss to South Florida on Sunday in an NCAA softball regional final.

The Owls (35-25) set a team record with 12 hits in the postseason game and scored four runs or more for the first time in their last 14 postseason contests. Junior Jen Musillo, who struck out eight, took the loss to finish 12-9.

FAU trailed 7-0 before scoring four runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Shauna Corso, senior Danielle Arriaga and freshman Kala Guy all singled and scored in the inning.

Junior Jenna Lopez was hit by a pitch and scored the Owls' first run. Mandie Fishback also had a hit in the inning, with pinch runner Marlene Lopez scoring for Fishback.

Fishback, Guy and Lauren Crandall all knocked in runs. Crandall had three hits and reached base safely in all four at-bats.

USF totaled 12 hits and scored two runs in the first, three in the third and solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Christi Ecks (24-11) got the win for the Bulls, who advance to face UCLA, winner of the Los Angeles Regional, in the Super Regionals.
