Has anyone seen the ransom note?

Posted May 10, 2006 at 11:21 AM

With the news in Wednesday’s Tampa Tribune about the University of South Florida’s negotiations with Tampa Sports Authority for the continued use of Raymond James Stadium, one question came to mind: does TSA blindfold USF and provide them with a cigarette?

The sports authority is asking for $120,000 a game. Why don’t they ask for $1 million a game? They would get it, because they can hold USF hostage. USF has no other options, except to play its home games at King High School or play all 12 games on the road. Whatever happened to Raymond James Stadium being a community facility? I guess the fine print said “the Glazer’s community.†I realize without an on-campus stadium, USF should feel fortunate to play in a state of the art NFL stadium. It’s just unfortunate they don’t have the same relationship as Pittsburgh’s stadium does with the Steelers and Panthers, who are treated as equal partners.

I remember in 2000 when former USF AD Paul Griffin wanted to have a 3-foot by 5-foot, 300-pound green plaque, honoring USF’s 43 First Team members who had donated a minimum of $50,000 and raised $5 million before the program began, displayed in Raymond James Stadium. After two years of “negotiations,†the Bucs/Glazers allowed USF to mount the permanent fixture inside the stadium on the West Club Lounge wall.

Why did this take two years? Let’s just say the location the Bucs/Glazers wanted would have been a terrific spot - for everyone who had to use the restroom. Using the plaque as a doorstop would have been a better location. However, Griffin wouldn’t accept such shoddy treatment and continued to fight until both parties could agree on an acceptable location. Six years later, the fight continues.

now if this was in the paper... the bad press would help usf position and may garner "community" support and mobilize usf alumni to lend support and help usf "negotiate" a fairer deal.

Sadly, The Glazers are a-holes who have no respect for themselves and their cartoon Pirate Ship in the endzone. They don't want us there and it has been obvious for a long time. TSA won't talk back because the Bucs bring in abput 80-90% of what that satdium makes.
