By Roy Fuoco

The Florida High School Athletic Association announced the four finalists for the position of commissioner, and they include former Polk County school superintendent John Stewart.

The other three candidates are Dr. Dan Boyd, Tom Seitz and Gary Shiffrin.

The finalists to replace retiring commissioner Robert Hughes were approved the FHSAA Board of Directors on Monday at its spring meeting in Gainesville.

The board will conduct interviews and select the new commissioner at its June 10-11 meeting at the Wyndham Westshore Hotel in Tampa.

"I am impressed with the list of finalists the board approved today," Hughes said.

"Those candidates look really strong, and I am impressed with the diligent work the search committee did."

Stewart and Boyd are the only two finalists currently associated with the FHSAA.

Stewart replaced Fred Allen, who retired last year, as associate commissioner of athletic operations in August. He went to the FHSAA after spending three years as deputy superintendent for Pinellas County. Stewart, who received his Master's degree (1971) and Doctorate degree (1981) from Florida Atlantic, spent 13 years as school superintendent in Polk County. He is also a former principal at Auburndale and Winter Haven High Schools.

Boyd currently is the associate commissioner for compliance, a position he has held since August of 1999. He spent four years as assistant superintendent for instruction for the Alachua County School Board and spent 24 years as principal of Gainesville High School.

Boyd received his Master of Education degree from Florida in 1966 and Doctor of Eduction from Nova University in 1976.

Seitz, a former college athletic director, is the executive director and CEO of USA Water Polo. He was an athletic director for more than 10 years -- three at Jacksonville State (Ala.) and seven and a half years at Jacksonville University. Seitz gradauted from The Citadel in 1982 with a Master of Business Administration degree in 1982.

Shiffrin is the principal of Merritt Island High School, a position he has held since last summer. Before going to Merritt Island, he was principal of Jefferson Middle School in Merritt Island for nine years. He also was an assistant principal at Rockldge High School for six years. He has served as Cape Coast Conference commissioner since 1991.

Shiffrin graduated from Rollins College with a Masters of Educational Leadership degree in 1975.
